We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katarina Tifft a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Katarina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always had a creative side, but I never seriously considered turning my passion for art into a full-time career. It honestly didn’t seem possible to make a living through art. Whenever I asked my family for career advice, they would consistently encourage me to pursue something creative. However, it was a significant life change that truly prompted me to reevaluate my career path. I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of where to go next, and that’s when I decided to explore my artistic talents. An opportunity to create art full-time presented itself, and I realized that this was my chance to follow my passion and make a living doing what I love.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Of course! My name is Katarina Tifft, and I am a self-taught artist.
My current body of work began in 2020, I gave in to the temptation to keep my hands busy, and I began experimenting with seashells. I wandered through the rabbit holes that made me happiest. Naturally, the things I was most passionate about also resonated with many other people, and my personal exploration expanded into my current form of work.
My approach to each work is rooted in my interest in the space between fine arts, design, and craftsmanship. I create within this fascinating intersection using my hands, head, and heart. I am deeply committed to the handmade aspects of my work, and my vision is to create contemporary sculptural art through the combination of organic mediums that connects the viewer to the natural world by exploring geometric shapes, repetitive patterns, and abstract imagery.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Well, I believe that one way society can best support artists and creatives is by choosing hand made products and original art to decorate their home over mass-produced goods. This not only promotes the work of artisans and artists but also encourages a thriving creative ecosystem in the community. It’s a great way to appreciate and invest in the skills and talents of these individuals while contributing to the local economy.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Sure thing! So, I’ve been able to gather over 160,000 awesome followers on Instagram in just three years. Building up my following was quite the adventure, and I quickly realized the importance of having a cohesive feed. To make sure my artwork looked its absolute best, I decided to invest in professional photography, and it really paid off. Now, if I had to give some friendly advice to anyone who’s just starting to build their social media presence, I’d say: don’t be shy, get out there, and connect with your audience. Respond to comments, have chats with your followers, and team up with fellow creatives in your field – that’s the secret sauce to a thriving social media community.
