We recently connected with Kat Uyenco and have shared our conversation below.
Kat , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any thoughts around creating more inclusive workplaces?
Over the past two decades in this industry, I’ve witnessed significant changes, both positive and negative. When I first entered the entertainment industry, it was predominantly dominated by white men, and I often found myself being the only Asian woman, almost like a token representation, in a company or on a project. Naively, at a young age and new to the business, I didn’t immediately recognize the issue. However, as I progressed both professionally and personally, I gradually became aware of the lack of diversity around me.
The absence of representation within companies and the limited perspectives showcased in shows became evident to me. Looking back, I am appalled by the lack of political correctness in the content that was portrayed on television during those times. As an executive, woman, and Filipina American, I now actively strive to rectify these shortcomings.
Today, my commitment is to ensure diversity and inclusion in all aspects of my work. I make it a priority to foster a more inclusive environment by diversifying my staff and crew on every project. It is essential for me to give everyone an opportunity to shine and contribute their unique perspectives creatively. By doing so, we can craft content that is more well-rounded, representative, and resonates with a broader audience.
My personal and professional growth has taught me the importance of advocating for change within the industry. I am determined to create a positive impact and contribute to a more inclusive and diverse future for the entertainment world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born on the beautiful island of Cebu, Philippines, and when I was just 8 years old, my family immigrated to California. Growing up, I always had a passion for makeup artistry, and it led me to make the bold move to Los Angeles to pursue my career.
In 2002, I landed a role as an Executive Assistant, marking the beginning of my journey in the world of reality TV and stage shows. Eager to immerse myself in the business and break down barriers, I fearlessly took on multiple positions. Whether it was working as an assistant, makeup artist, talent coordinator, or anything in between, I made it my mission to become a Jacqueline of all Trades.
Through sheer hard work and unwavering dedication, I gradually climbed the ladder, securing opportunities with renowned networks such as VH1, MTV, NBC, CBS, Netflix, Hulu, WeTV, TLC, and Lifetime. Years of relentless effort and perseverance paid off as I now hold the esteemed positions of an Executive Producer and Showrunner. Some of my notable shows include VH1’s “The Surreal Life: the Reboot” and “Family Reunion: Love & Hip Hop Edition,” as well as WeTV’s “Waka & Tammy: What the Flocka” and “Grown and Gospel.”
I currently call Los Angeles my home, where I strike a balance between my work and personal life. While I’m often the first to rely on coffee to kickstart a busy production day, I also make sure to incorporate self-care practices into my lifestyle. Yoga, meditation, cooking, and spending time at the beach rejuvenate my spirit. I cherish moments with my loved ones, indulge in fashion and beauty, explore new destinations through travel, and find immense fulfillment in serving others.
With over 20 years of experience in the industry and a wealth of knowledge working with major TV networks, I have become a highly accomplished Executive Producer. As a passionate storyteller and skilled communicator, I possess a natural instinct for creativity and the ability to bring imaginative concepts to life. Moreover, my leadership style revolves around mindfulness and inclusivity. I strive to foster a work culture that radiates positivity and empowerment, where every team member feels valued and inspired.
In summary, my journey from a young Filipino immigrant to a trailblazing Executive Producer reflects my resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to creating captivating and diverse stories in the entertainment industry. My drive, creativity, and ability to influence others make me a force to be reckoned with in the world of television production.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a creative, the most rewarding aspect for me is the freedom it provides. Creativity is a subjective realm where there are no definitive right or wrong answers or visions. This lack of rigid boundaries allows ideas to flow freely, encouraging exploration and experimentation. It empowers me to express myself authentically, embracing my unique voice and perspective. This freedom of self-expression is incredibly liberating and fosters a deep connection with my work.
Moreover, the beauty of creativity lies in its diverse interpretations and responses. Each person may perceive and appreciate art in their own way, adding richness and depth to the creative process. Witnessing how my creations evoke emotions and resonate with individuals in various ways is a truly fulfilling experience. It reinforces the notion that there is no singular truth in art, and every perspective is valid. This dynamic and ever-evolving nature of creativity continues to inspire me, driving me to push the boundaries of my craft and make a lasting impact.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
During my 20s, I worked as a production coordinator for a celebrity-driven show on a major cable network. The non-union, unscripted world demanded long hours—12 to 16 per day, 6-7 days a week. One night, after a grueling shift that ended at 1 am, I drove home in heavy rain on the 405. Exhausted and struggling to stay awake, I nearly skidded off the road into a canyon. That terrifying experience prompted a life-changing decision: I pledged to set healthy boundaries at work and always prioritize my safety. From then on, I’ve been committed to speaking up for my well-being and ensuring that my working conditions are conducive to a healthy and balanced life. It’s a lesson that has empowered me to approach my career with resilience and a renewed focus on self-care.
