We were lucky to catch up with Kat Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
The biggest trend I see in the hair industry is TikTok. It is a great way to get you and your work out there! The most recent trend that I have seen are consultation videos. These are such a helpful tool for both hair dressers to see how to consult difficult services and for clients to see what questions to ask and if the stylist they are seeing does in depth consultations and makes them feel comfortable! I personally would rather watch a 3-5 minute video than scroll through endless photos. Which is why I think my TikTok account reaches more of an audience than Instagram.

Kat, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been in the hair industry for 10 years! I have worked as an educator and also in commission based salons during that time. In April of 2023 my business partner and I decided we wanted something more intimate and our own so opened our own private studio, Sun and Moon Studio in Colorado Springs! It has been the most fulfilling thing to see our dream come alive in the walls of our studio. I offer cutting and coloring services in a safe and comfortable space. I want folks to know that I am very passionate about my work and I love making new connections and sharing laughs while you get pampered and leave loving yourself more once we are done!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In the hair industry, our clients are walking/talking advertisements! Happy clients and good hair = referrals! Word of mouth is the most effective way I have grown my clientele and I am very grateful to my die hards!

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My partner Devon and I met at the last salon we worked at. She and I grew very close in the last year and we have so much in common when it comes to our values, how we see ourselves evolving and the care we share in our clients. Even though aesthetically we are both very different, I think the balance of both of our personalities reflects in our space and how we choose to operate our business.
