We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kat Roe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kat below.
Kat , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I have taken was starting my apprenticeship and leaving behind what I knew and what I was used to. Starting my tattoo apprenticeship was something that took so much focus and determination, adjustment and a lot of learning. I went for over 2 years barely making money. I didn’t realize this at first. This is a risk in itself because it is fairly easy to get discouraged on this path, and you don’t want to get thrown off of that path and lose all of your hard work. Next would be opening our own private tattoo studio. That jump is also risky, because you don’t always know what risks are associated with starting your own business. You also don’t always know if you are going to be able to pull in the same amount of income that you’re used to, (potentially more depending on the bills that come with owning a shop)
The next biggest risk I would say, would be attempting to merge our holistic health business with our tattoo business. This is the current risk we are taking in order to bring health awareness into the tattoo community, a community that isn’t entirely focused on their physical health and wellbeing. We see the potential growth that caring for your health can bring to tattoo artists, and artists alike. We also see how this could potentially affect our current client base, as health and diet can be a touchy subject for people.
Kat , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kat, I have been tattooing for a little over 6 years out of Columbus, Ohio. I had always been interested in tattoos since I was about 8 or 9 years old. Once I got my first tattoo, I was hooked. I spent a lot of time around tattoo shops since I was 18 and still never really considered tattooing, because I didn’t have a lot of artistic ability at the time. Once I met my partner, he inspired me by showing me that being a tattoo artist isn’t always about the money. He taught me that you can care about the art and the client. This inspired me to take the steps necessary to become a tattoo artist myself. During this time of exploration, I also realized how a tattoo can change the way that someone thinks about themselves entirely. This is what further inspired me to do everything in my power to offer the most comfortable, individualized, life changing experience possible for every client.
I do more stylized tattoo work, mostly black and grey dot work and neotraditional color work. Along with offering Intuitive Tarot Tattoo sessions, where a tarot reading is done to help the client work through any blockages, or to achieve certain desires. This reading is then transformed into a tattoo after a specialized meditation session. These tattoos serve as talismans, or charms that they carry with them to empower them on their life journeys and drive them to their desired destiny.
I also offer eyebrow enhancement services (permanent makeup) in the form of microblading, nano blading and powder brows. I love how this just transforms peoples’ confidence!
I try to solve one of the biggest problems for my clients, their confidence and the way that they perceive themselves. This has helped them to diminish anxiety, social anxiety, depression, mental blockages and has also helped some of my clients realize that taking care of themselves makes them feel like a new person as well. I take immense pride in the fact that I aim to raise the individual vibrations of all of my clients and to help them realize the value of self-love and personal growth. I love them, and if I can impart some knowledge, happiness, understanding, a calm environment and just overall good vibes, I’m there!
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Social media and word of mouth. Social media is amazing for growing your client base. The secrets of social media change all the time. But something that helped me with Instagram specifically was, consistency with posting. You don’t have to post every day, just choose a cadence and stick with it. Another thing is, hashtags, but not too many. Just pick 7-10 good hashtags that have to do with either your location, line of work, or has to do with what is currently in the post. Telling a story within your caption is key to connecting with a like-minded audience as well, letting them get to know you a bit more. Captions can also act as SEOs.
