We were lucky to catch up with Kat Robinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Ever since I was a child, I always preferred artistic outlets over the more fundamental learning such as math and science. I was obsessed with music, literature, paintings, sculptures, etc. I think I landed on photography because my mom was always taking photos of me and other things when I was a child. I always loved taking photos of nature and such, but don’t think I truly felt I wanted to pursue a creative path until the pandemic hit. People all around were losing their lives, and I felt that if I was going to pass on, I wanted to at least do something meaningful to me. From that point on, I refined my photography skills and set on a path to fulfill my dreams.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have done both photography and modeling for about 15 years. I started learning about photography in high school taking photography classes, but I didn’t really start my business until the pandemic started. I decided if I’m going to go out, I want to at least do something I love. As a black woman, I wanted to make a name for myself in what is usually a white male dominated field. I still have a ways to go, but I like to think I’ve started to become a well respected and admired photographer in the industry here in Arizona. What also sets me apart is my modeling experience. Having been a professional model for many years, I’m confident in my capability to pose people in a way that feels natural and not forced. When working with me, you can rest assured no matter the type of session, you will have more than just a photographer. You will have a cheerleader, a mentor and a friend!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Don’t let people tell you you can’t do something. I don’t care if it’s your own parents – if you want to do something, go put yourself out there and do it. When I was in high school, my photography teacher told me I didn’t show enough promise to be a photographer and should pursue something else. My family also wanted me to pursue something more practical that I could earn a consistent living and retire off of. For a while, I did what they all expected of me. However, I realized that life is too short, and I should at the very least give what I want to do a try instead of never going after it at all.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
‘You Are A Badass’ by Jen Sincero. I was at a really low point in my life both personally and professionally when I came across that book. It’s a self-help book, but unlike any that I had read before. It felt like a friend giving me a heart to heart, instead of someone lecturing me. I think that helped me reframe my mind and have more confidence in myself.
