We were lucky to catch up with Kat Pinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To be successful, it’s key to have a goal that really drives you. What’s your why; What drives you to do what you do every day? Success looks different depending on who you ask. For me, success is being better than I am the day before. In business terms, success is being able to impact someone’s life, however that may look. I started my candle business at first as a hobby, but it led to not only continuing my grandmother’s legacy, but also to have clean products throughout the homes of friends, family, and supporters.



Kat, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kat Pinson and I’m originally from a small northeast Texas town, called Pittsburg, TX. I came to Austin in 2013 to get my undergrad at The University of Texas where I focused in Sociology. I went back in 2021 to pursue digital marketing and ultimately started to focus on my candle business more seriously. I pride myself in making non-toxic candles with clean products.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My #1 source for new clients has been social media. Having a presence on social media has increased my sales by over 150%. While I don’t have a large following, I have over 6,500 followers on TikTok by simply being consistent. Another great source that I was doing last year was pop-up shops. I learned quickly though that summers weren’t the best for me as my candles would start melting (most markets are outdoors)!



How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’ve built a strong reputation by providing clean products, great quality, creative design for custom gifts, and lastly, by treating everyone with gratitude. They choose each time they purchase from me, to support me vs a big box store brand. This to me means everything. They chose to refer me to friends which is another great way to create awareness of my brand. I don’t ever think I’ll open a retail store, but I love the small growth that I’ve been able to achieve in the past year.
