Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kat Nagar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kat , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
A few years ago, I considered closing the company and moving on to other pursuits. I decided to give it one more year. It’s been small successes year after year that have motivated me to keep going. The relocation of the film industry here has helped a great deal. I’ve enjoyed lending my talents to those projects and am happy to see my efforts preserved for posterity.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I provide performance, lessons, choreography, and dance calling for dances from the Renaissance up through the 1960s. If someone is looking for unique entertainment for their event, I’m the person to call. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to gather a fantastic team of musicians, dancers, actors, costumiers, and historians. I love to perform and enjoy inviting people to take part in learning historical dance. Getting to actually dance, instead of just watch, really brings this art form alive. The inspiration of little girls is a particular joy for me. It makes me happy to hear that they want to be me when they grow up.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During the pandemic, work stopped immediately. I began teaching dance online with varying success. A local museum started filming history segments and I was lucky enough to be invited to develop a few programs about historical dance and clothing. There was a learning curve with both options. I learned that it’s not a great idea to wear green when dancing in front of a green screen. When things started to open up again, I figured out how to modify dances to offer socially distanced dance at events outside.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Since my interest covers many eras of dance, I started with one Facebook page and eventually needed to add another. Over time, it made more sense to combine them. I also post on related Facebook pages, such as DanceATL, historical dance pages, and historical sites to reach my taget audience. I use Youtube, Instagram, and Tiktoc and try to post on a regular schedule and at the right time of day. Never underestimate the power of good photos and a video. I had minimal engagement until Outlander Ball Atlanta in 2020 and currently, I’m preparing for Bridgerton Ball Atlanta on August 14,2022.
