We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kat Hall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am so happy as an artist. I felt a call from a young age to create music and art, and as hard as I tried to “fit in” and get a normal job and fit in with society, the music kept calling me back. When the music flows, you have no choice but to listen. Sometimes it may seem irrational to drive hours to a show or stay up countless nights in the studio to finish a track, but it’s all worth it! When you’ve been called by a certain profession or hobby, it gives you purpose. Following your purpose might lead to less financial stability and more of an unknown path, but if you’re an artist, you have a responsibility to stay true to your purpose and bring the art to physical form.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kat Hall. I’m Reggae, Funk, Neo-Soul artist with a deep passion for songwriting and performance. I was lucky enough to find music at a young age, and determine that my purpose is to spread a message of Love and Unity through music and storytelling. Singing and playing guitar on stage with my own band and featuring with other bands is what sets my soul on fire. Getting a crowd of people dancing is exhilarating for me, and my goal is to always leave my listeners feeling uplifted and inspired after my shows. My music contains messages of empowerment, and I plan to always bring light to difficult topics and encourage my listeners to look within, as this is what brings real change in the world. When Spirit flows through me, I listen and translate my lessons to song through stories and musical melodies.
When I’m not performing, I am creating video content, editing or creative directing for other musicians and companies that resonate with my mission.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The mission behind my music is to utilize music as medicine that has power to bring people together. Music is a universal language, and has the ability to transcend boundaries that create the illusion of separateness between us. My goal is to write and perform music that gets people thinking and invites listeners to look within for the keys to what they’re seeking. Musical events and festivals have a great power to put everyone on a level playing field and create a unity that opens a space of collective oneness. My mission is to infuse positivity and love into these environments and ignite a flame of inner change within listeners.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Being a musician or artist might seem irrational to some, but to us artists, art is LIFE! When it calls you, you can’t help but to pursue it. Even when reality sets in and you realize that being an artist is not financially stable and calls for hard work, the music or art always calls you back. It’s an unexplainable feeling, but when you truly find your purpose, the universe seems to conspire to bring ideas to fruition in physical form. It’s a strangely satisfying experience to bring ideas to life, and the world always benefits from it.
