We were lucky to catch up with Kat Fishbein recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
I currently work for my family’s tattoo shop and I could not be happier. Tattooing a beautiful tradition that has been passed down by artists for generations. Having tattooing being passed through the family is something I feel very fortunate to watch and be apart and is something that ultimately brings us even closer together. My husband is a second generation tattooer and we hope to be able to pass it down to our kids.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a tattoo artist in living Colorado. Art had always been a very important part of my life. Growing up I always knew I wanted an art focused career. As I entered high school I knew I wanted to work with others to create. Tattooing offered an environment where I could create and collaborate with others to customize their bodies. When I was 19 years old I began my apprenticeship and I was a full time tattooer by the time I was 21. I specialize in black and grey, sacred geometry, and fine line tattoos. I work with my clients to create a unique design that they can be proud to wear for the rest of their lives. I am personally most proud of my client relationships. Learning to tattoo I always admired my mentor’s following. He had been tattooing people since they were 18, who would bring their children to get tattooed by him when they were of age. The longer I tattoo the more I see my own relationships grow into something I cherish and look forward to growing them even more.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
After high school I did a short period in art school. It be came very clear to me that college was not my path early on and what I really wanted to do was tattoo. This was not a popular idea in my family, but I took a chance. It was a lot of hard work to work a job and a full time apprenticeship but well worth it. I would never change a thing.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My business partner is also my husband. We met at work and very quickly found we work very well together. We have very similar goals and values, which makes our partnership very successful.
