Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kat Cox. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kat, appreciate you joining us today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
I don’t believe every business has to become a giant corporate machine. I don’t believe increasing revenue and growth for growth’s sake have to be business goals for a business to be successful. I’m not interested in fame or fortune. I want to provide a good service for a worthwhile clientele, not just make as much money as I can. As a friend recently said, “What’s wrong with just being local?” I am perfectly happy providing a service for friends and small business partners that pay me a living wage, rather than constantly trying to find the bigger and better. I can grow alongside my clients and appreciate them for what we add to each other’s businesses now.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Writing has been my passion since I could first spell my own name. I started writing stories very young, and taught myself to type so that I could write them faster. I love words and I love writing them down, and my love of fiction and poetry has turned into a career in marketing and copywriting. While earning an MFA in fiction in New York, I started working in sales and marketing, and 15 years later, I’ve worked for a variety of industries in a variety of roles. My tagline is: “I’ll write anything”, and that’s true. I currently specialize in content such as blogs, white papers, and brochures, as well as web copywriting, social media copy, and email copy. I still write fiction, and write customized erotic fiction for customers, too.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Because I have always had a passion for writing, it’s been easy to parlay that passion into side hustles and gigs. I love helping others be better, and I can do that for small businesses by writing the things they have trouble articulating. I started taking freelance gigs writing website copy, press releases, blogs, brochures, and more when I was working full-time as a marketing manager. Eventually I was able to take the leap from my full-time job and become a full-time freelancer by building a portfolio over the years. Although the pandemic in 2020 pushed my back into the security of a full-time in-house position, I have pivoted to being a copywriter rather than a marketing manager or communications director, and find it much more fulfilling. I am still able to take side gigs and continue in my copywriting business, and find a balance in the two that I truly enjoy.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am very much interested in helping others succeed, particularly small businesses. My job is to make them appear as good as possible and communicate their abilities to their clients and potential clients. I do that by understanding what they do and using clear language to get the point across. Often people have trouble writing their websites or other marketing materials because they can’t find the words to say. My facility with words is my gift to them — taking one thing off their plates and helping them shine.
