We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kat Blair a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
I am a full-serviced stylist. I am not one of the ones that are making you “come washed, blowdried, and halfway done” lol. I pride myself on giving my clients an excellent experience. When they arrive, I’m ready for them, and they are getting shampooed, conditioned, blow dried, and sometimes trimmed before we get started. And the hair is included! That’s rare these days, but that will always be my standard as a licensed cosmetologist.

Kat, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a licensed hairstylist/braider that focuses on natural hair and protective styling. I don’t use anything on my clients that I wouldn’t use on my own hair! I mainly use Mizani products because they work extremely well with all levels of curly hair. The main problem I solve with my clients is giving them their time back. When they book an appointment with me, I get them in and out with full service, so they can focus on more important things-business, family, happy hour, the gym, etc. You are getting shampooed, blowdried, trimmed, and styled. And I offer a variety of options-You can come to me for a twist out, a silk press, some knotless braids, and some color. An all inclusive-resort type of vibe:) Being nice and effectively communicating is also something that my clients appreciate from me. It’s important to me that my clients feel comfortable enough communicating with me so that they leave happy.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started my business with $0 and a dream lol. I started braiding when I was 8 years old, in my mamas living room and all I had was a comb and some ponytail holders. I slowly took the money I had and bought better things over the years. I was only moving at the speed of my cash. In college, I eventually I was able to rent a two bedroom apartment and turn one into a “hair room”. And now in 2022, I have successfully built clientele in 5 different cities. All from $0 initially.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
INSTAGRAM. Back in the day it was word of mouth, but now its Instagram. Being able to post videos, reels, stories, hashtags, has taken my business to a whole new level! So many people find me on there and they are able to see my talent through my posts.
