We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kat Beanland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
One of the kindest gestures I have ever experienced is when someone spoke highly of me in a space where I wasn’t present. It was during a time when I was feeling unsure of my abilities and struggling with self-doubt. A boss I had often found herself in the circle of influence of our organization and during a department head meeting that I couldn’t attend she took the opportunity to mention my name when discussing a project I had been working on. She could have easily sat through the meeting without thinking of me. When I learned about this later, it was a powerful moment for me. Knowing that someone believed in me to such an extent that they advocated for me when I wasn’t there felt incredibly uplifting. It reminded me of the positive impact sincere support and recognition can have on one’s morale and future. Her simple act of speaking highly about me in my absence not only boosted my confidence but also reinforced the value of genuine connection and encouragement. It served as a poignant reminder of the impact we can have on others with our words and actions, making it one of the most meaningful gestures I have ever received. This is also one of my company’s distinguishing characteristics and values and we value our expansive network of vendors, consultants, skilled labor, and more. We truly understand the power of a person and a connection.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a wife and mother of one angel baby and two amazing children affectionately known as the Beanie babies. I’ve worked in almost every customer-centered industry you can think of, from construction to hospitality. I’ve worked for small start-up businesses and for multi-million dollar organizations. No matter where I was, I set that organization up for sustainable success and expanded profits.
I started Beanland & Associates to help entrepreneurs and leaders find work-life balance and truly find rest again. I’ve worked with and watched business owners’ and managers burnout, miss important family functions, become frustrated, always on call for one reason or another, and genuinely wonder why they even started their business. I bring over a decade of experience, a degree in business administration, with a focus on psychology and sociology, and years of experience in business operations and administration. In all my experiences I seen time and time again that a business is at its best when its leader and staff are able to truly rest their body, mind, and spirit.
So, what makes Beanland & Associates unique? We’re a family business that is committed to ensuring our clients’ whole being is taken care of, not just their bottom line. I understand that when a business organization’s leader isn’t able to balance their life, things get missed, dropped, simple tasks become frustrating, and stagnation appears in your business, which, of course, affects profits. I’m here to provide fresh eyes, be a sounding board for ideas, or just another objective opinion. We want your business to THRIVE and succeed beyond all your wildest dreams.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a team and keeping morale high is all about leading with both your heart and your head. It’s important to be open and understanding while also being logical and strategic in your approach. Encouraging open communication and creating a safe space for your team to share their thoughts and ideas can greatly contribute to a positive work environment. Remember, everyone on the team has valuable insights to offer, so allowing anyone to provide solutions can boost morale and foster a sense of inclusivity. Recognizing and appreciating your team members’ efforts, providing constructive feedback, and celebrating achievements together are key elements in maintaining high morale. By showing empathy, being supportive, and promoting a collaborative and transparent culture, you can effectively manage your team while keeping spirits high.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Absolutely, talk to me long enough, and you’ll realize I’m a huge Disney fan, but if you read “The Ride of a Lifetime” by Robert Iger you’ll see why. This book is a game-changer when it comes to management and entrepreneurial insights, but it’s also one that you can’t stop reading. This book provided me with a new perspective on leadership and decision-making. Iger’s experience as the CEO of The Walt Disney Company offers valuable lessons on navigating challenges, fostering creativity, and creating a thriving company culture. His storytelling and wisdom have resonated deeply with me, influencing how I approach both my professional endeavors and personal growth. The experiences, lessons, and approach to decision-making he shares in this book have inspired me to think more strategically, take calculated risks, and focus on building meaningful relationships. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to elevate their management and entrepreneurial thinking to new heights.
