We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaszia Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kaszia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
During the pandemic I was really craving a candy apple and I thought maybe I could make my own since everything was shutdown, So, I went on Google and YouTube to see what ingredients I would need to make can candy apples. It seems pretty easy, but it was a total fail lol. During the process I learned my own do’s and don’t’s. Such as, which apples taste better for dipping in candy, the perfect temperature, the cleaning process to avoid bubbles on your apples, and how to add my own flavors. After about 2 weeks of experimenting I finally figured out how to dip a candy apple successfully and I had fun making the apples. I was so proud of myself I decided to post my apples on social media. A few people inboxed me asking how much for an apple and I didn’t really have an idea to sell them at first but people really wanted to try my candy apples so I stepped out on faith and started taking orders. Since then I have added to my menu of making cake pop, chocolate covered pretzels, candy grapes, chocolate strawberries, candied popcorn, and dipped rice krispy treats. Making treats has become my passion and I take every order big or small very seriously.

Kaszia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the treat industry making just simply wanting to make my own candy apples. I make custom candy apples, cake pops, chocolate covered pretzels, popcorn, other candied fruit and chocolate dipped rice krispy treats. What sets me apart is that I strive to give customers exactly what they want. This is truly a passion because I enjoy making tasty beautiful treats for any event

How did you build your audience on social media?
I built an audience on social media by creating a page just for my treats. I try to post consistency and make sure im being responsive whenever someone reaches out wanting to place an order. My advice for those starting to build on social medias would be to be consistent, engage with the people, and be authentic

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a big candy apple order, and the customer was going to pick up the order in 2 hours. As I was placing the apples in the refrigerator, I dropped half of the apples and the candy broke off. At first I panicked because it was almost time for thr order to be picked up but I was quick to get more apples and had enough time to finish. Even though I was in distress I was able to recover quickly without asking the customer for more time.
