We were lucky to catch up with Kassie McKeown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kassie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have had a huge impact on what I’m doing with my creativity. I’m so thankful for all my parents have done, but I especially appreciate specific things they did with me growing up. My Mom is a very creative person. When I was little- and even to this day- my Mom would color, paint, build, and create with me. Our most recent project was making an eight-foot-tall moon prop for my junior prom. She has an eye for angles and knows how to line things up just right, but also knows how to tell when they’re the slightest bit off; I get that from her and it comes in handy with photography. My Dad is extremely business oriented. He’s taught me how to be responsible with money, how to create spreadsheets and proposals, and how to make a profit from your hard work. As an example, he had my brother and I make a presentation when we wanted a raise in our allowances. He helps me when I have questions about anything, and is always willing to do some research for things I’m interested in. When I was researching dslr cameras-my very first one- he was the one who helped me find the best camera for the best price. He was also the one I went to for questions about building a website and how to be a professional when in the business side of things. Being a photographer, you need to have more than one side. It just so happens that my parents influenced the two mindsets I needed: creativity and business. They’ve given me countless opportunities to do things I love, and I’m so thankful that they are supporting me in all I do.
Kassie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kassie McKeown and I am the sole worker of Lace Umbrella Photography. I am currently a high school senior and am involved in many things outside of photography. Gymnastics, drumline, cheer, pit orchestra, and jazz band are just a few of them. I love music and sports, and that carries over to photography. I photograph anything I find interesting or beautiful and it just so happens that my interests can turn into interesting and beautiful photos. Sports and concerts are my favorite scenes to be involved with. I get to tell the story of the artist or athlete by adding my creative touch while also enjoying the things I love. I am set apart by my creativity and variety. By having experience photographing so many things, I am able to offer my services to anyone who needs it and will be more than happy to try something new.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being a photographer is getting to share what I see as beautiful. I want people to see the beauty in the world, and I think I have a great eye and powerful platform to share that. I was taught to focus on things I’m thankful for. If I had a bad attitude, my Mom would ask me to tell her five things that I’m thankful for. Photography is a perfect way for me to focus on the good things, but also to share them.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal with photography is to share a perspective of the good things in life, but also the beauty of God’s creation. Whether that’s people, music, sports, nature, or anything in between, I want to give a fresh perspective on how amazing life truly is.
