We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kassandra Love a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kassandra, thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In my opinion, achieving success requires several key elements. First and foremost, it’s essential to maintain your passion and enthusiasm for your chosen career path. This means keeping the flame inside you burning bright, and dedicating yourself to your work with your whole heart.
Equally important is having a strong support system in place. This can include mentors, colleagues, friends, and family members who believe in you and provide encouragement and guidance along the way.
Another crucial aspect of success is resilience in the face of failure. It’s important to remember that setbacks and mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and can ultimately help us to become better and more skilled in our field.
Finally, it’s important to recognize that true success takes time and effort. Mastery of any industry or skillset requires years of dedicated practice and hard work, and overnight success stories are often the exception rather than the rule. By staying committed, persistent, and focused on our goals, however, we can ultimately achieve great things in our personal and professional lives.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kassandra Love and I am a designer from Toronto, Canada. I own and operate KATAKOMB, a brand specializing in alternative fashion. I got into the industry because I have always had a passion for unique, edgy fashion that stands out from the norm. I was self-taught and learned through trial and error how to put together a small fashion business. At KATAKOMB, I design alternative clothing for bulk manufacturing, wholesale, and retail. My designs are edgy, unconventional, and appeal to those who want to stand out from the crowd. I take great pride in my attention to detail and branding, and I believe that this sets me apart from others in the industry.
I solve the problem of finding unique and edgy fashion that isn’t readily available in mainstream stores. My clients come to me for clothing that they can’t find anywhere else, and I deliver on that promise. I am most proud of the fact that I have built my business from the ground up and have been able to make a name for myself in the competitive fashion industry.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that I am passionate about what I do and that I am committed to delivering high-quality products that exceed their expectations. I believe that my unique design aesthetic and attention to detail truly set me apart from others in the industry, and I am excited to continue growing and expanding my brand in the years to come.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a time in my career when I had to make a pivot. I had started a business with a friend, called Rebel Love Clothing, where we specialized in retro-inspired dresses. While designing for the company, I realized that I wasn’t designing for myself or my personal aesthetic, and my heart wasn’t in it anymore. I felt like I was designing for a certain type of customer, but it wasn’t fulfilling me creatively.
So, I made the difficult decision to give up my share of the company and start over completely. It was a scary decision to make because I had invested so much time and effort into Rebel Love Clothing. However, I knew that I needed to follow my passion and design for a market that spoke to my personal style.
That’s when I started KATAKOMB. It was a complete departure from what I had been doing before, but it was something that I was truly passionate about. Starting from the ground up again was a challenge, but it was one of the best choices I have ever made.
I am really proud of myself for making that pivot and creating a brand that I am truly passionate about. It was a leap of faith, but it was worth it to be able to design for a market that speaks to my personal style and to be able to pursue my passion in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling.
How did you build your audience on social media?
In my experience, one of the most effective ways to grow a social media following is through high-quality photography. This can help to showcase your products or services and establish a consistent visual aesthetic for your brand. Additionally, collaborating with influencers who align with your brand values can be a critical aspect of building your following. A single post from an influencer with a large following can potentially go viral and introduce you to a whole new audience of people. It’s also important to prioritize quality over quantity when it comes to posting content, as posting less frequently with high-quality content can help to maintain your brand’s identity and reputation.
