We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kassandra Comas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kassandra below.
Kassandra, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
It takes a lot of patience. Especially being the type of person who can’t stick to just one craft. I learned how to work around Photoshop when creating small business designs for myself and other crafters. I’m still learning Procreate to draw my stickers, decals, and positive quotes of the day. I know there’s lots of features I haven’t figured out yet. I learned to crochet, had to figure out how to print stickers, navigate my Cricut program to cut decals. They all took lots and lots of YouTube videos to practice. It doesn’t happen over night and it takes a lot of trial and error to master it. Don’t give up. If you find a passion for something, just stick with it. There’s no limit to creativity as long you don’t overwork yourself and balance it all out.
Kassandra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I opened an Etsy shop in 2016 offering premade and custom prints, mugs, and canvases with a variety of quotes. I shifted a couple of years later into creating digital designs for myself and other small businesses. I offer business card designs, thank you card designs, sticker designs, packaging designs, etc. In 2020, with a decline in design services, I began making handmade crafts. Bookmarks, ornaments, physical prints, and since then I’ve incorporated hand drawn and hand lettered stickers and decals and crochet items like iPad/kindle/book sleeves, wristlets, and coasters. I’m a crafter of all things but still offer design services for those who need them. I’ve begun participating in more in-person vendor events and always update my socials with event details. If you’re local to the Pasco/Hernando County areas, give me a follow & come check out some events! :) I’m always open to custom requests. I love to create and it’s a great feeling when I’m given creative freedom on a project and my customers are just blown away by the end product. I’m hoping to continue to grow Doozie & Bloom. I’ve been pushing myself lately to get out there more on socials, especially TikTok. The internet can be pretty cruel which has kept me from stepping out of my comfort zone and doing more videos showing myself doing my work. It’s a slow process but I’m getting there!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my honest and most humble opinion, just engage with us. My saying is “you don’t have to pay to support a small business.” Share their posts, comment your thoughts, tag a friend if you come across a piece you know they’d like. It’s taking the time to engage with a small business/artist that shows them their work is getting out there and being seen.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to create. I work full-time and I am currently pursuing my degree in American Sign Language so I haven’t been able to dedicate as much time as I’d like to Doozie & Bloom. I don’t slack on any chance I get to create something new. Being creative is therapeutic to me. Whether I’m drawing something in Procreate or crocheting. Just getting lost in the art and creating freely is rewarding in itself. It’s a passion I won’t give up and I don’t care how long it takes me to get to where I want to be with this business. As long as I’m creating, I’m a happy camper.
