We were lucky to catch up with Kasia Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kasia, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Yes, I am way happier working for myself. I love the flexibility of my schedule and that I have a choice when and how long I want to work. If I don’t feel too well, I’m tired I can just stay at home and relax all day. On the other hand, I work every day. Sometimes it’s just 20 minutes, 2 hours or 12 hours. I know that some people need the routine in their life, some structure to feel the stability and safety. Having my business I discovered that I actually function better when every day is different. It inspires me, makes me keep going. I like the unexpected- sometimes I get a call or email that a job is in 2 days. Honestly, I don’t remember when was the last time I wondered how it would be to have a regular job. I’m happy where I am, and even when there’s some stressful times I remind myself how lucky I am to do what I love and being paid for it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kasia Johnson and I’ve been a fashion stylist for 5 years. I style fashion campaigns, commercials, models and private clients. You can see my work on brand’s websites, fashion magazines like Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour worldwide and on my lovely personal styling clients. For them I offer services like wardrobe detox, personal shopping, styling for special occasions, styling for personal photo shoots and packing for trips. I always bring my best attitude, I’m reliable and discreet. I’m most proud of styling a campaign for Puma, NoMad residencies and being published in print Harper’s Bazaar Arabia March 2022 issue.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I feel like my story showing my resilience is very common among people starting their creative career. Your family and friends might be skeptical, because starting freelance in creative field might be risky. They worry and that’s normal. So the most difficult and exhausting part is juggling a job which pays bills and working/ building portfolio. I did that for almost 2 years. As a fashion stylist, I need to have some (hopefully good) work showing my talent and skills. I’m progressing and learning something new with every shoot I style, with every client I work for. My first client contacted me after 8 months of consisting portfolio building. It’s really tough when you work retail 5 days a week and on your days off you pull, style and return. I think we stylist we’re a breed of a kind, It’s crazy what we do but it’s also very rewarding!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson that I had to unlearn is “Working hard leads to success”. I used to work so hard because I believed that this the only way to get rewarded. I noticed that even if I love what I do, I started to feel really tired and was miserable for majority of the time. I felt ultra happy on the set, during the shoot. It’s because I had so much fun! I analyzed my way of working and I figured out that I put too much pressure on me to be perfect and that I forget to have fun during the mundane tasks of running around and shopping or pulling and then returning. Now, I have more fun, I feel lighter and I noticed that everything started to work out for me better! Having fun and maintaining the genuine passion in what we do is the key to “effortlessly” achieve success :)
