We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful KASHUNA HOPKINS. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with KASHUNA below.
KASHUNA, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
I take vacations so I can be mentally prepared to work hard.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started Favored Medical Billing in May of 2011 after 5 visits to the ER that was eventually diagnosed as multiple ulcers due to stress.
Trying to be a good employee along with striving to be a good mom and wife ( when I say “good” I mean only crying in the laundry room 3 times a day instead of 5) was unnecessarily difficult.
I had been in medical billing for 10 years and with the encouragement of my husband, who had recently been fired due to budget cuts, to quit my job and start my own company, I did.
I cold called every office listed on our state department of health registry and just like that, in a matter of 23 days I was an entrepreneur, wife and mom that had increased her laundry crying to 6 times a day. Tears of joy, happiness, disbelief, and pure terror.
My company is 12 years old now. I have 6 full time employees and 3 part-time employees.
All my clients throughout the US were attained via word of mouth.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I pride myself in hiring minority women from low income areas with less than 2 years of college education. Very specific right? You are correct. My parents were on crack most of my childhood so I basically raised myself by working at the mall and selling weed on the side. I was a good student but with 0 family support, I barely graduated high school and unless I was receiving an overpayment in college grants, “higher education”, was a no go for me.
I had a church mentor that worked at a doctors office and hired me to take messages. I loved it , loved it, loved it and begged to learn more. She taught me everything she knew then fired me so I could make more money. My hiring style is very specific because I am able to do the same. Take a young lady that the world under normal circumstances would discard and teach her a career to forever be able to financially support her family. It’s my favorite part of my business and why I think the universe has blessed my company in the manner in which we have been.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
