We recently connected with Kasey Verboom and have shared our conversation below.
Kasey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kasey and I am a wife, mother, and practicing holistic nutritionist. Like most holistic and functional practitioners, I found my way into the profession by means of my own health journey after struggling with chronic, vague symptoms for many years. I had seen multiple doctors and practitioners without success, and became increasingly hopeless and overwhelmed. Finally, I took it upon myself to dive deeper and really figure out what was going on with myself – I wanted to truly find a way to feel better and believed it was out there. As a result of my quest for improved well-being combined with my love of learning, in 2018 I decided to attend school and graduated to become a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. I went on to advance my skill set through completing courses in fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum nutrition and health, functional blood chemistry, chronic disease and root cause issues, and more. Now, I’m always digging into some sort of book or research article!
Some people ask what sets me apart from others in my industry. I believe it is my in-depth and diversified training that allows me to review signs and symptoms and bloodwork from a functional perspective. This means I look at a person’s lab values through what functional practitioners consider “optimal” ranges rather than those considered “normal” set by conventional guidelines – these are usually established by collecting data from a large sampling of the population that includes people with varying degrees of health. Mamas who are newly postpartum or breastfeeding for example, may have elevated liver markers that could be considered totally normal, whereas in a healthy adult male, elevated liver enzymes could point to toxicity or underlying infection. There is no one size fits all, and the path to improved health is always different and as unique as the individual I’m working with!
I am very proud of all the time I have spent studying and researching the most effective ways to help people regain their health and sense of self through nutritional therapy on an individualized level. There really is so much information available these days; my experience both personal and professional truly helps people cut through the noise and heal.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Aside from the skillset and know-how, I think one of the most important things that makes a successful holistic practitioner is the ability to listen and empathize. A lot of the time, clients will come to me having felt sick for years and not had success in mainstream medicine. They may have felt written off, or been complaining of vague, bothersome symptoms that get chalked up to “just having had a baby,” or “stress.” Yes, stress majorly impacts our health, but things like chronic infections or deficiencies or issues balancing blood sugar also affect our mood, or we have brain fog – we get mental symptoms! I really try to make a point to give my clients the floor and talk as much as they need, especially during our initial assessment, so that they can maybe feel a bit lighter after talking. Listening and relating to your client is also helpful so they don’t feel so alone, and they feel seen and heard – which is a bit easier when you’ve walked the path yourself!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I spent a lot of my time in my mid to late 20s feeling chronically ill; it was really hard and I had to grieve for a while because this is a time when you should be bursting with energy and exploring the world! I tried all the diets, all the basic protocols, all the things that are pretty common knowledge and accessible these days. But none of the programs worked – none of the 30 day challenges or elimination diets helped. After years of this (which is a common narrative I hear in my practice with people who have not felt well in a good while), and still finding myself struggling with fatigue, gut issues, insomnia, headaches, etc., I knew there had to be a better way. This is when I learned to pivot and venture out on my own to see what I could learn and find out to help myself and others; I went to school and completed my certification and dug into research. I quickly learned that there is no one path to healing, no one right diet or supplement protocol that works for all AND has lasting results. The power lies in the unique protocol built on assessing the function of an individual’s body, deficiencies, toxicities, infections, stress levels, etc., all of which can be evaluated by talking in depth to the person about their concerns, taking note of their signs and symptoms, and lab testing. Testing testing testing is SO valuable! This has been true for myself and my family, as well as my clients.
