We recently connected with Kasey Mathews and have shared our conversation below.
Kasey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My defining moment was half-way through my second pregnancy when I went into premature labor. I clutched onto the arm of a nurse, looked in her eyes and said, “Things like this don’t happen to me.” To which she quickly and calmly replied, “They do now.” A day later I delivered a baby girl weighing 1 pound 11 ounces. With that, my journey as a “Preemie Mom” had begun.
There are so many powerful and defining moments that stand out along that journey, even to this day, as we prepare to witness our 22 year old daughter begin her final year of college. Yet, the defining moment that led to the work I am involved in today took place on a Reiki table. My daughter was turning seven, and I was still struggling with PTSD and the after effects of her 4 month NICU stay and numerous life-saving surgeries. With the Reiki Master’s hands gently resting on my belly, I finally dared to speak aloud all that was living inside me – the uncertainty, the apprehension, and the fear that we would lose her. As I spoke those words out loud, something shifted within me; like a bubble had popped and something was released.
Soon after, I began writing my first book, Preemie, Lessons in Love, Life and Motherhood. That book became the vessel in which deep, often hidden universal truths were brought to light, and others also facing adversity would be assured they were not alone on their journey.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I had never set out to write a book, but that book seemed to have an energy all of its own and had every intention of being written. Before Preemie had even left the publishing house, I was asked to speak at a conference for neonatal therapists, and after that the speaking requests continued. It seems the time had come for the medical community and beyond to understand more deeply how traumatic events affect everyone involved in the experience. I consider myself an “accidental entrepreneur” because without ever intending to, I became an author, a speaker and a coach. I was traveling around the country, spreading the universal messages about overcoming adversity, choosing love over fear, speaking hidden truths out loud and many others.
Today, with the benefits of technology, I work 1;1 remotely with women from all around the world. As a Transformational Life and Book-Writing Coach, I’m on a mission to uplift and empower women ready to lead a life overflowing with abundance, purpose, joy and gratification. I believe the time has come for women to find and harness their own authentic voices and share them with the world in whatever form that takes. By doing so, we as individual women give others permission to do the same, and in turn, ignite positive change on a global scale.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My daughter’s premature birth was the most unexpected and terrifying event of my life. We nearly lost her several times and her journey to health took years, teams of incredible medical providers, amazing alternative therapists and boat loads of grit, hope and an unwillingness to give up. There were many times I questioned whether I had the strength, fortitude and worthiness to raise this child. Yet her resilience inspired everyone around her, including me. I found strength and resilience within myself that eventually led me to becoming a mentor and voice for women needing guidance, support and inspiration in their own lives. I harnessed the experience of deep challenge and adversity and used it as fuel to learn and grow and inspire others to do the same. To find this strength, I had to learn and become aware that vulnerability does not equal weakness, and that in fact to be vulnerable, is to be at one’s greatest strength.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Many may question whether my approach to clientele acquisition is a “strategy” at all. In the early days, as I was establishing my business, I fell into the belief that I had to hustle and “pound the pavement” to drum up clients. However, I found that approach did not align with my beliefs, led to few clients, and left me exhausted and stressed out. So I pivoted and created a new approach that has proven successful for me and the clients I train and guide into launching their own successful coaching practices. The cornerstone of my coaching and life philosophy is removing any limiting beliefs that potentially impede us from successfully attracting others with which to work. These beliefs usually live in the subconscious and without us knowing it, sabotage the work we’re doing. To eliminate these blocks and beliefs,I utilize powerful “Ancestral Clearing” techniques in my coaching practice. I encourage all business owners and everyone offering their own services to the world, to explore what’s beneath the surface in their own lives and potentially obstructing and/or limiting their path forward.
A favorite quote that illustrates this point beautifully is by renowned poet, Mark Nepo – “The flower doesn’t dream of the bee, it blossoms and the bee comes.”
