We recently connected with Kasey Klein and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kasey, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
There have been many times the idea of being an Artist / a Creative full time has crossed my mind & path. The very first to note, I was working part time for my uncle who was a Dentist in Palm Bay, Florida. It would be my senior year of high school & he would always give me stacks of photographs to learn about composition, sketch, study subject matter from his travels. One day in his office working, I remember standing in his hallway at work looking at 8′ x 10′ black and white glossy photographs admiring them and that feeling struck so strong, wow, I want to always do creative work and that be my full time job! I want to be an Artist. A couple years later after obtaining my associate degree I would transfer to a 4 year degree college to get my BA and study art formally as I wanted to know more about all the things Art involved.
Kasey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into painting with acrylics, watercolors, and mediums in 2002 – ish getting to know those items. They were the tools most taught & studied by all of the great art masters. So of course, those would be the ones I wanted to learn first and work with my hands. At this time I offer original artworks, prints on demand, custom hand made stencils from up-cycled leather material, commissions, unique designed palettes from local potter and curated workshop experiences for clients. My typical medium present day is watercolors and natural earth pigments mixed with an all natural vegan medium.
One problem I solve for a client in a workshop setting, all the materials are there, clean, ready, organized and they are guided by me though also given space to explore. For majority of hands on time creating I like to offer the handmade stencil for them to dive in. A lot of people over years want to focus on the composition and sometimes that can be draining if you just need to be creative. The details will always come and we will always get better with practice in any skill we are seeking. The key to these classes its a time and space to exercise flow, play, exploration to see what’s next. With each Art-ing experience there will be a cup of tea to sip as well in a real piece of china. Taking time to be creative is sometimes all we need to recharge our perspective.
I am most proud of the opportunities I’ve had to study art on my own, in school, in Italy with a mentor, in Scotland (Edinburgh College of Art), with friends, other well known artists, continuing to push myself in ways to expand. A local artist encouraged me to do a mural during Anti-Gravity Mural movement and i’m so glad they did. It gave me an appreciation for mural art in a new light and what my super powers are and are not. Though, I can do anything I set my mind, body and spirit to.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes! I wish that I would have sat down with someone in the business world early. Even if there is no intention to sell items, or do art full time. That the opportunity to learn about small business is so essential to set yourself up for good habits, patterns and success without being so overwhelmed when you do start. Start now. Ask for help from a mentor who has had success doing what you like to do. Invest in a coach in that field or area you may feel is not your strong suit.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is embodying it on a daily basis. Being an artist and creative is like breath, water and movement. We need all of them to be alive. Whenever I am not being creative life doesn’t feel nearly as good to me. Having the chance to be a creative more helps me to share it with others and to encourage that its ok to share your flare! Its rewarding to my soul to be me and art helps others to get to know themselves on a deeper level as well as others.
