We were lucky to catch up with Kasey Ciesiensky recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kasey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I believe we do several things differently from the industry standard, but 1 sticks out the most to me.
We focus on making products that are healthy and good for people. Most of the green cleaner companies on the market today focus on being eco-friendly and good for the environment. And while, I want our products to be good for the earth, first and foremost I want our products to be good for our customers.
I believe that as people choose products that are healthy for themselves, they will naturally be healthier for the earth.
I’ve researched some natural cleaner ingredients that biodegradable, but pose a risk to people’s health. And to me, that’s backwards.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Kasey, but some folks call me Red, for my red hair. About 11 years ago, I was pregnant with my first-born and was sitting on my kitchen floor cleaning it with some conventional floor cleaner. I remember the cleaner smell was super strong and I was wondering how moms cleaned with a baby or toddler underfoot. Surely those fumes weren’t good for them to breathe in.
That’s when I started researching the ingredients of the cleaners I was using. I didn’t like what I found, so I started making my own, and it turned into a business.
My company is called Red’s Gone Green, and we help naturally-minded mamas create healthier, happier homes with
all natural cleaners that smell amazing. We have 9 unique scents, including Coffee Vanilla Cinnamon and Coconut Lime.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We have a reputation with our customers for making cleaners that smell amazing. I’m pretty picky when it comes to the way things smell. I don’t like synthetic fragrances, so I don’t use them in our products.
I use a high percentage of essential oils, which can be pricey, but totally worth it. I do a lot of research and testing into which essential oils pair well together. I also don’t scrimp when buying my ingredients.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
We’ve always manufactured our products, and I don’t plan on outsourcing anytime soon. My biggest advice in manufacturing is to not scrimp on your ingredients/materials. When you scrimp on those, it shows in the end product.
Top quality materials result in a top quality end product, which results in happy customers. Happy customers usually result in long-term customers and word-of-mouth, aka, free, advertising.
Another thing I’ve learned is to always stick to your formulation when making batches. There’s been many times while I’m making a batch of cleaners and I decide to tinker the formulation just a bit, for whatever reason. And every single time I tinker with the formula, I have to throw out the batch because the scent is off.
