We recently connected with Kasey Acuff and have shared our conversation below.
Kasey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My biggest risk I have ever taken was actually going 100% into my business. I grew up having to work random side jobs with my artistry as a weekend job. I was working receptionist at a Medical spa and suddenly we were told it would be closing . Me and my husband had a serious talk about my next step and he had the confidence in me only doing my freelance makeup artist business , we both prayed and trusted Gods timing and I’m so happy I took that leap. It’s been 10 years since I decided to become my own boss and each year I continue to be busier than the previous year . It has been such a blessing and still surreal to me after 16 years in this industry .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kasey Acuff and I am the owner of Kasey Acuff makeup . I grew up always knowing I wanted to be a makeup artist . I often joke I never gave myself an ‘option B’ for a job so I would be more determined to make my dream come to life . I worked my first wedding 16 years ago , I was the official Memphis NBA Grizz girls makeup artist for almost a decade until weddings made it more difficult to continue both . I was lucky enough to be certified by ‘ makeup by Mario’ in Los Angeles the beginning of 2019 where Kim Kardashian was the model of the siminar . I will never get over the fact makeup has become such a successful career for me and this is my actual ‘job’ . The city of Memphis has supported and referred my name out so much that I will eternally be grateful.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My commitment to my brides has become one of the things I am the most proud of . In 2018 the week before Memorial Day weekend I was in a head on collusion and I broke my right wrist , the first thought seconds after the crash was ‘ I have 7 weddings this weekend!!’ After consulting with an orthopedic doctor the same day he said even Wonder Woman couldn’t do it and I would have to cancel them . Challenge accepted because canceling on my brides will not and never has been an option. I can proudly say I finished all weddings successfully and can say nothing will stop me from my commitment .
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I owe so much to my vendor friends in the wedding industry . The Memphis wedding industry is huge but we also are a huge family . I have several vendors that recommend my name out daily and give me the most incredible reviews to my brides , I will never be able to thank them enough for the support all of these years .
