We were lucky to catch up with Karyna Pulcho recently and have shared our conversation below.
Karyna , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
For 7 years of working in the tattoo industry the most favorite and meaningful thing for me is helping people who have scars, burns and bad experiences with tattoos made many years ago by an inexperienced artist. I remember how my love for tattoo and scar covers was born. It was 2018 and my first scar cover, then I was still afraid to do such work due to the lack of much experience, but the girl’s story prompted me to try to help her. It was a girl from my school with whom we did not communicate much, and I never knew what was going on in her life, and why she wore closed clothes even in the summer. Her arms were covered in scars from blades, and she was afraid that someone would see it. Then I decided to help her feel more confident and no longer be afraid of other people’s opinions. I covered her scars with a flower style and visually no one would have thought that there were scars there, she received many compliments about her new tattoo and began to wear revealing clothes without being embarrassed. This brought me boundless happiness and I fell in love with this part of my work with all my heart.
Karyna , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a tattoo artist from Ukraine and have been working in the tattoo industry for 7 years. I am a universal artist who does tattoos in all styles from fine lines to realism and covering up tattoos and scars. I love my job, but I get the greatest pleasure when I do something that is useful for others. Many people with scars and unsuccessful tattoos do not even suspect that all this can be hidden and make a really beautiful project that will revive their self-confidence. Almost every second client of mine comes to me with their own special story and problem that I try to help them solve. On the one hand, this is not just a tattoo session, this is tattoo therapy, I would even say rebirth therapy, after which people become more self-confident, happy, reveal their potential, and get rid of the complexes that they had because of scars / stretch marks on the skin, old bad tattoos.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I often get criticism on Instagram from people who don’t like tattoos. And this is entirely the choice of each person, because in order to decide on a tattoo, you must first of all like it. But if there is at least some chance to help people cover up their scars or bad tattoos, then I will support these people and try to help them by creating the most comfortable conditions, atmosphere, etc.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I worked as a tattoo artist in Ukraine for 5,5 years. I was the owner of a wonderful tattoo studio in the city center, which had a wonderful creative atmosphere for me and my artists. A wonderful team, place, daily work is a pleasure. But a war began in my country and I moved to the USA. I started all over again, my team, my friends and family were not slaves, at first there were few clients. I had a feeling that the previous 5 years would not have happened at all. But the clients who came to me and appreciated my work helped me a lot. Then I began to perceive everything that was happening as just a new stage in my life, because I am not starting from scratch, I have experience behind me, and this means that this is not a start, this is a new chapter, more unknown and difficult, but after 2 years I have friends, a wonderful studio, a good team and the same wonderful clients. So I can say one thing, no matter how hard it is, you can cope with everything, and this makes life even more interesting.
