We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karyn Frisby. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karyn below.
Karyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The last time I was interviewed for this magazine, I had recently launched Five Ten Social, a boutique social media management firm during covid, after owning an indoor swim school with my ex-husband for many years. Needless to say, I had started over in a big way. Since then, I have continued to work as a Social Media Manager for several local, women owned, small businesses. It’s been an absolute fabulous and fun experience. However, there was something missing. It was about 7 months ago, when I realized I needed a more steady income. It was a moment when I felt like I failed myself. Sure, the business was growing, but so were my three kids and their needs. It was a moment that I had to either sit in my pity, or embrace all that I had accomplished thus far. This is just another step to continuing to grow in all aspects. I also realized I missed my first love, the aesthetics industry. So, I made a list , a vision board, of what was important to me moving forward and how to achieve that. Within a month, I had found myself back in the industry I loved so much, as the Director of Sale and Marketing for Destinations Medical Spa! Working with my Five Ten Social clients along with the new position, allows me to continue my journey as an entrepenuer as well as achieve success within a company/industry I enjoy so much. Putting what you want out in the universe does work, and trusting yourself to pivot.

Karyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
A friend of mine recently told me, “Karyn, you have been so successful in everything you have done.” It made me stop and think how the course of my career did not go the way I had planned at 22 years old, but it’s brought me to where I am today which makes me so proud. I went to school for a communications degree, with the goal of working in PR/Marketing for a movie studio in Los Angeles. This Texas girl came out to Los Angeles with big dreams, and very quickly found myself intimated and unsure if LA was the place I was meant to me. Fast forward to now, where I am the Director of Sales and Marketing for Destinations Medial Spa, utilizing my twenty years experience from marketing, building a brand, aesthetics, customer service, and business development all in one place. Not long after making San Diego home, I went back to school for my esthetician’s license. Skincare and beauty had always been a passion of mine. I was trained by celebrity brow artist, Anastasia Soare when working for her La Jolla spa. After the birth of my first child, I, along with my then husband, opened Floaties Swim School, an indoor year-round swim facility. It was my 13 years there, creating a brand from scratch, building it into a successful business that people trusted was where my creative and entrepreneurial spirit grew. After major changes in 2019, I found myself launching a podcast, Get Real with Karyn, as well as Five Ten Social, a boutique social media management firm focusing on small businesses. Working with local, mostly women-owned businesses the last several years has been inspiring. Having owned my own business for so long, I know what it takes to run a business on the daily. It’s not a 9-5, and it’s not spa days and mai tai’s either. It’s work. It’s a lot of grit and grind. My clients appreciate that I not only can help them build their brand, but more than most, I understand where they are coming from most days. I recently took that same experience into my next chapter. Five Ten Social is alive and well, however, I had an opportunity to bring my two favorite things, aesthetics and marketing, together in one amazing job. As the Marketing Director for Destinations Medical Spa, my day to day is spent creating, engaging and building our brand. Destinations Medical Spa is located in North County San Diego with a spa partner in Escondido ( Blu Life Wellness). Destinations has set itself apart creating the bridge between science and beauty with cutting edge aesthetic services and an exceptional staff. One of the things that I thought was so unique about DMS, there is a mobile service in our model. We can come to YOU, We bring the world of aesthetics to the comfort of your own home. Our patients will find all the same safety policies and procedures in place as you would in the traditional office setting. It’s a really unique service we offer to San Diego. It’s an exciting time to be apart of the aesthetics world again. Social media offers many ways for the consumer to not only learn about the must have procedure, like Morpheus8, they can also see it done through reels, Tik Tok and more. That’s where my job comes in to create and share. I’ll be hosting another podcast soon, all centered around Destinations and the aesthetics industry. The team and I are so excited for this show to launch in October. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and informative! I”m looking forward to this next chapter!

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Being in the marketing field, it’s always changing especially with social media and the new AI marketing tools hitting the scene. I realized early on in life, which has translated into my career, having the desire to want to continue to learn has been the greatest asset. I may feel I’m at the top of my game, but I’ll be the first to listen to the person next to me about their tools for success. I am constantly learning from others, which I know has only helped me in my craft.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back would I choose the same profession? Yes! I absolutely love working with so many creative people, telling stories and building brands. And now, being back in the skincare industry, I am having the best time of my life with my two passions. Both industries continue to grow and evolve, and having the opportunity to work with so many creative, smart and dynamic people is an absolute joy.
