We recently connected with Karyn Elle and have shared our conversation below.
Karyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I think the biggest risk I have taken was launching my podcast and small business. I grew up wanting to be an entertainer, acting, dancing, and telling jokes. I have always been creative. I remember growing up in midtown Manhattan and singing songs I had written in my diary, out of my bedroom window. As life progressed my passion for media and arts had to take a back seat. Raising my family became the priority, as with many of us mothers. But it was always there. I remember taking my notebook to my daughter’s softballs games and spending my time there writing what will one day be my first drama series. After becoming an educator and raising my kids, it was my turn to follow my passion. That feeling began to ignite once again, only this time I was in the mental, emotional, and physical space to be able to feed it, receive it and act on it.
As I drove across the George Washington Bridge one morning on my way to work, I remember thinking, “This cannot be my life.” I am way too talented, smart, and funny for this to be it. And so, I called my daughter in that moment, and I explained to her that I wanted more. I was sure of who I was, and what I wanted, and the life I was living wasn’t it. She said, “Mom, if there is anyone who can do something about it, it’s you!” What are you going to do?” I went home that night and after three years of being scared and unsure I began the work to finish the Sayith Loud Business model, website, and infrastructure. I then taught myself how to launch a podcast. I knew how to produce and edit and all that good stuff, but I had to learn how to get my voice from my laptop and onto the major market streaming platforms.
Three months later both my business and podcast were live. Sayith Loud was born.
The Risk! What people don’t see sometimes is the risk, for one the risk of failing which we all naturally have. I was scared to be so open and vulnerable. I dropped out of Teachers College at Columbia University to pursue my passion instead. It was a risk. But the biggest risk was the internal struggle I had with myself. Being good enough, going against all that I had been taught and gambling on myself. Most importantly realizing
I AM WORTH THE RISK
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Karyn Elle, The Voice of Sayith Loud Podcast, and the Visionary behind Sayith Loud LLC. I run a boutique media company that specializes in brand management, writing services, podcast coaching, small business coaching, creative direction, project management and more. I work with small businesses, talents, and visionaries to bring their business and projects to life. As a voice, I offer voice over work for commercials, voice acting, hosting, emceeing, speaking engagements and more. I created this company around my passion, and my vision to one day have a production company that gives up and coming artists, talents, and visionaries a place to flourish. We are also launching a Roku channel in 2023 with a number of series. 2 Live shows and a sneaker ball to raise money for Breast Cancer and Sickle Cell. I’m excited.
What sets Sayith Loud and Karyn Elle apart from other media companies is that we are small, give one-on-one attention to projects, and look at our clients as individuals not projects. So, we share in the vision and the creative development of the person and business just as much as the final project. We also understand the need artists and talents have around support and budget and so I have created services that are attainable in any budget. I want my clients to know that their success is my success. Sayith Loud stands on, “We all have something to say…. Why not SAY IT LOUD.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I have learned or had to unlearn on this journey, is as a creative I cannot always be in work mode. To be my most creative I learned that I had to experience life, feel the sun, smell flowers, listen to the birds, unclench my jaw, loosen my shoulders, and walk slower . I had to unlearn that being busy all the time was better. As I leaned into being a creative and business owner, I had to unlearn the ideas of constant pressure, racing through life, and letting my business run me, instead of me running it. I had to learn what I needed, in order to be the most creative, how I worked best and what I needed in order to be funny. What I learned was that creatives need to be inspired, we need to feel things, we need to have moments that we feel deeply so we can tell those stories. That’s what Sayith loud is, we help people tell stories through media, Photography, music, poems, scenes, books. It’s all stories. I grew up believing that I needed to work all the time and, in my business, while that’s great, it can leave no room to be creative. Unlearn that. Allow yourself to feel, to creative, to be your best! That will be your best work. You will be your BEST work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is when you see your work and the personal fulfillment of celebrating your work. I love when I help a business, do a great show, or marvel at what I have created. I feel the reward in my heart beating when I am on stage and the crowd is laughing. I see the reward when I have a mic in my hand, and I watch the audience enjoying themselves. It’s rewarding when my fans greet me in the street and share an experience with me. My personal reward is I made this, from nothing. I think for me one moment that sticks in my memory is on stage at one of my live shows. I was telling jokes and working with couples to practice intimacy. I watched as these people laughed and danced and took pictures. At that moment I just marveled at it. That my goals, vision, voice were bringing people joy. Those moments affirm my passion, my work, and my goals. I love it. I love bringing joy to others, watching them, and sharing in their journey.
