We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kary Wurth a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Wurth Media was born out of necessity and drive. At the time it was launched, there was no business plan, market research or hours spent pouring over the what-ifs and the hows. I was ready to take my future in to my own hands. I recognized a need in the social media space, particularly in real estate, home building and design where most of my experience came from, and I went for it.
In month one I had three non-paying “pilot” clients. Month six I had five paying clients. Month 12, I had ten paying clients. Three years later Wurth Media had 30 clients, 4 full-time employees and 3 part-time freelancers. It’s growth blew me away and I was obsessed. Not because of growth alone, but that I had taken a leap, didn’t let doubts stop me and that I was proof anyone, anywhere, particularly women, could make whatever dream they had possible.
My mission is to prove to women of all ages that if you work hard enough and don’t give up you can do anything.
Kary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Based on an obsession with design, real estate and home building and a combined background in marketing, I began posting interests and inspiration on Instagram in early 2018. What transpired was a passion for connecting with other individuals and brands via social media who shared the same interests.
In less than a year, my following strategically increased to over 3,500 followers. Using this expertise, Wurth Media now develops social media strategies that most small businesses don’t have time to implement, learn or keep up with in this constantly changing environment.
We create content for our clients via photography and videography with our trusted network of local partners. We dig in to an individual or businesses brand to learn their story, what makes them unique, and ultimately why someone would choose to do business with them. We consult with our clients regularly to ensure that every piece of content we manage and put out is driving brand awareness and sales.
I believe that what has made us successful is the way we’ve niched our focus on social media alone, as opposed to offering a full suite of marketing materials. We niche down further by only providing our services to those within specific industries. I wanted us to be experts in social media, and experts in our clients industries. That’s a rare combination in this field.
I am a single-mom of two. I’ve seen a lot of things, worked a lot of jobs and starting my own business has been one of the greatest accomplishments in my life. The odds were against me, but I persevered and made it happen. My aim is to show other women, they are capable of the same thing.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
When Covid hit, the reality of the situation on a global level slowly began to affect my outlook, my morale and my worry that my business wouldn’t survive. My then husband’s pay was greatly affected and providing an additional income was more of a necessity than ever. I was at one of the lowest points in my life; it took everything to get out of bed in the morning wondering which client would have to pull back their marketing budget and how I would continue to thrive.
It was during that time of social-distancing and quarantine that I think we all recognized it was time to approach things differently; whether it be on a grander scale or in our day-to-day lives. Having little do to, I began working with a videographer to create content that could help those struggling to continue marketing their business during covid. We filmed a series of videos aimed and teaching everything we knew about social media, photography and creating content. This not only kept me busy, but giving something to others was something that boosted my morale.
Slowly, the world started recognizing just how important things like social media, and technologies like Zoom and House Party were to keep us connected. During Covid, Wurth Media was able to gain brand awareness and ADD clients as a result of our positive approach to the current climate.
I learned to remember and respect that things can go really, horribly bad at any point and the sooner we recognize that, the more prepared we are when it inevitably happens again. It could be a world-wide pandemic, the loss of a loved one, divorce, or a bad set of circumstances. But it’s how we choose to react to these situations that brings us out better on the other side.
Funding your business – tell us the story of how you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business.
My thoughts… depending on your industry, you don’t always need funding. I started my business with zero money and an idea. But, I don’t sell products, I provide a service. This matters. Ultimately, ask yourself, what can I do myself to save money? So many things actually, build your own website, do your own social, READ READ READ (google and youtube exist for a reason), sponge up every freaking podcast you can on any topic you need to learn about to starting your particular business (I guarantee there’s one out there for whatever whacky detail you’re questioning), and most importantly don’t do things the “right way”, do things the way they need to be done to make it happen.
