We were lucky to catch up with Karsten River recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Karsten thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
We diverge from traditional creative practices by blending sustainability, innovation, and artistry. Our work uniquely transforms post-consumer waste into striking, high-performance sculptural and design pieces through advanced AI-driven robotic 3D printing.
Unlike standard art and design processes that use predictable materials, our robotic system employs adaptive generative design and machine learning to handle the unpredictability of recycled carpet fibers. This allows us to craft visually captivating and structurally unique art installations, lighting, custom furniture, and expressive design elements.
This creative approach not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also elevates recycled materials into a new artistic realm. We showcase that art and innovation can actively solve pressing global issues while inspiring aesthetic appreciation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Our journey was born from a passion for reimagining what is possible in the intersection of art, sustainability, and innovation. Our journey began with recognizing a critical environmental issue – the overwhelming amount of post-consumer waste – and seeing it not as waste, but as a resource full of artistic potential.
Our founder’s background in robotics, AI, and design led us to develop a unique robotic 3D printing system that adapts dynamically to the unpredictable nature of recycled materials. This system integrates cutting-edge AI-driven generative design and adaptive machine learning, enabling us to produce captivating and structurally intriguing art installations, lighting, custom furniture, and bespoke design elements that defy traditional aesthetic boundaries.
At our core, we solve two critical problems for our clients: creating visually compelling, customized art and design solutions, and helping them significantly reduce their environmental footprint. What truly sets us apart is our commitment to innovation that elevates sustainable materials, reshaping perceptions around what recycled art can be.
We are most proud of our ability to create meaningful connections through our work, inspiring conversations around sustainability and creativity. A recent partnership with a prestigious Los Angeles gallery highlights our mission vividly. We were commissioned to create an immersive, large-scale sculpture crafted entirely from recycled carpet fibers, transforming environmental responsibility into a visually powerful narrative. This installation became a thought-provoking centerpiece, igniting dialogue on sustainability and art’s role in advocating for environmental change.
We want our clients, followers, and fans to know we are not just about making beautiful objects; we are about redefining beauty itself – showing that sustainability can be inspiring, transformative, and profoundly impactful.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Our resilience has become the essence of our artistic journey. We constantly choose not to be confined by conventional standards, embracing flexibility in our methods while remaining stubborn in our vision.
Aware of the substantial resources required for specialized equipment, we built our studio piece by piece over several years, carefully expanding our creative capabilities. Early on, this idea appeared almost delusional to many around us. Persistence gradually transformed that skepticism into belief, as the ambitious dreams we once only talked about began to emerge in our creations. I believe this is important for every entrepreneur, artist and ambitious person to understand, Initial skepticism from people around you can be extremely hurtful to your drive and energy, and one thing you’ll have to learn is to not seek external validation for most of the beginning. You must wait for those desires to follow while doing what you love. Whether that’s validation, money, etc. Once you begin to see those desired come naturally, you can begin to lean into those experiences. This approach eliminates high expectations, impatience, and ego. This is what will keep you moving forward steadily.
The beauty of this journey is experiencing how initial efforts, often met with confusion or disbelief, eventually return opportunities. After our first successful year of sales, we started applying for grants to accelerate our vision and impact. We also found meaningful partnerships with local carpet and mattress recycling companies, sourcing their post-processed materials to give life to our products. Embracing these moments has taught us invaluable lessons about resilience, the importance of staying authentic, and pursuing your vision for its intrinsic passion rather than external validation.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
When it comes to manufacturing our products, yes, we do it ourselves. Times are changing rapidly, with rising costs and resources stretched thin; however, advanced tools like 3D printers and desktop manufacturing equipment have allowed us to save significantly on both costs and time. These technologies provide extraordinary flexibility, reduced waste, and rapid prototyping capabilities, which have been invaluable to our process. Remarkably, this era is the first in history where artists and entrepreneurs have such easy access to powerful machinery right at home or in small studios.
My journey as a product designer is a great example of the power of modern technology and innovation. I taught myself various design software programs, enabling me to design complex machinery, like a $35,000 industrial extruder, which I successfully built from scratch at just 10% of that original cost. This achievement not only exemplifies creativity and resourcefulness but also highlights the immense possibilities that are now within reach for independent creators. Without these skills you are limited by capital in the beginning.
This experience was more than just a practical achievement – it was a profound lesson in resilience, creativity, and resourcefulness. It demonstrated the incredible opportunities available today if you are willing to embrace learning, innovation, and hands-on creativity. To other entrepreneurs and artists out there, remember this: your ideas are not limited by your initial capital; they are expanded by your curiosity, adaptability, and the powerful technologies now within your reach.
