We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karry Ka Ying Poon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karry Ka Ying below.
Karry Ka Ying , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Embarking on the journey to become a tattoo artist was a leap of faith that took me across continents and beyond comfort zones. Leaving my secure job in my hometown Hong Kong, I ventured to the U.S., a place where I knew no one. It was a risk-filled adventure. The decision to swap familiarity for the unknown was daunting, but the desire to pursue my passion for tattooing gave me courage.
This daring step not only transformed my career but also sculpted a richer, more colorful narrative for my life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Karry, a tattoo artist with a decade of experience, currently based in Miami. My journey with art started way back when I was just a kid sketching on anything I could find. I took my love for drawing to school, where I studied and majored in art and design throughout my academic journey. Getting my first tattoo at 17 back in Hong Kong, that moment lit a creative fire in me and I decided to become a tattoo artist.
As the owner of Hoomu Studio for over a year now, I’ve curated a creative haven where my passion for fineline blackwork style thrives. Specializing in an elegant and intricate approach, I craft custom designs that tell unique stories for my clients.
At Hoomu Studio, we open our doors to talented guest artists from around the globe, enriching Miami’s inked landscape with diverse perspectives and creativity.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a tattoo artist is the profound connection I get to forge with diverse clients and the privilege of listening to their stories.
Tattoos are not just ink; they are narratives marked on skin. I find immense joy in understanding the unique tales my clients carry and then translating those narratives into meaningful and personalized art. It’s about being a part of someone’s journey, and leaving a lasting mark that holds sentimental value. This deep connection with individuals from all walks of life makes every session a truly enriching and rewarding experience for me.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The initial road to tattooing was rocky; a local tattoo parlor took advantage of my rookie status, and fluency in English was a distant goal. I made little to no money, and the judgment from seasoned tattoo artists felt like a constant companion. Yet, each hurdle became a stepping stone. Over the course of my career, I cultivated a distinctive fineline style that reflects both my artistic evolution and commitment to precision. After a decade in the industry, I felt compelled to establish my own studio, to provide a unique and elevated space for both clients and fellow artists.
