We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karrick Adams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karrick below.
Hi Karrick, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Working as freelance artist is quite the roller coaster ride. No two days are the same. Earning a full-time living as a creative has its challenges, but it also has its rewards. I compare working as a freelance artist to having a different boss with every new project you encounter. This is a bittersweet field to be a part of. But being a creative on a daily basis is purposeful and meaningful. Waking up day to day to work in the creative space gives me life. It is like oxygen. I work until my eyes tire and begin to blur, and my hands cramp and stiffen. But I love what I do. There are times when I am overwhelmed and overbooked, and there also those spurts where the client work goes dry. Yet, all in all, I believe that if you live in your purpose, the universe will align with your gifts and take you to heights unimaginable.
Karrick, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Karrick Adams, and I am a graphic designer, illustrator, and an animator. I started in the traditional space as an artist and an illustrator. I felt pursuing a career as graphic designer was the perfect fit for me, so I attended The University of Memphis and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design. Working as a graphic designer, you have the opportunity work in mediums from digital design (logos, package design) to photography and animation. I believe my broad range of skill sets is what sets me apart from my colleagues. I consider myself a “one stop shop” for marketing and promotion, whereas, instead of hiring 2 to 4 creatives to tackle your project(s), I am ample enough execute a client’s entire project! For example, I have illustrated several children’s books-then animated the entire book in the form of a short story. Creating an entire “package” for a client is what I love the most.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I feel that being an African-American in the creative space is challenging. We (blacks and browns) DO NOT get the same opportunities and advancements as our counterparts. One of my goals is to assist in opening up opportunities for black and brown creatives. As my star continues to rise, my fellow creatives will have the opportunity to see that it can be done, and they have a voice and a platform. Being a catalyst for change and diversity will be ONE of my greatest accomplishments.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the fact that I get to live 100% in my purpose. Living under the umbrella of your gifts is a pleasurable experience. Being able to take a childhood dream and and convey it into a career takes passion, perseverance, and persistence. But the payoff is unmatched.
