We recently connected with Karolyn Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Karolyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
As a first year law student a lot of the lessons I learned from my childhood have continued to help me in this new phase of my life. My parents always stressed the importance of education. Furthermore, they encouraged me to lean into my strengths when looking into future career fields. I have always been passionate about serving others. That passion combined with my love of reading and writing has allowed me to utilize my gifts to succeed in law school. I will forever be grateful that my parents nurtured my gifts and natural abilities.
Karolyn , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up as a military child and attended a different school each year before I started high school. After high school I attended Appalachian State University where I majored in Communication Studies. A month after graduating I won the title of Miss North Carolina and went on to compete at Miss America. Throughout that year, I traveled 40,000 miles across the state of NC speaking to schools, political figures, and other North Carolinians.
Following my year as Miss North Carolina, I started law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While I am early in my legal studies, my life experiences have allowed me to explore a large variety of people and cultures across the country. I have found a passion in helping people from various walks of life and hope to do that in my career.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Across my social media platforms I strive to share my story authentically. I think this is the best way to build a following. Utilize the things that make you special and share them! People truly look up to and admire those who are not afraid to be themselves.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I changed my major several times while at Appalachian State before majoring in Communication Studies. It was a field where my interests in marketing, social media, and people combined. While I may not have advice for those well within their careers, my advice to students and young professionals is this: do not be afraid to change course and try something new if your first idea does not work out! There are so many incredible opportunities that will present themselves to you in life. You just have to find the ones that fit the life you were created to lead!
