We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karo Moralyan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karo below.
Karo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Recently I released “Now I Rise” an album of cinematic-style songs with artist and singer-songwriter Mia Mormino that I would say was very meaningful to me. As a kid, I had always been a fan of movie soundtracks and film scores. In fact, one of the reasons I got into music production in the first place was because I enjoyed them so much. I just remember the feeling you get when you a hear a particular song in a scene or how certain scores can make movies so much more memorable.
For this album, which was released by Little Assembly and West One Music Group, the songs are primarily going to be used for movies and tv shows, Though, it was not easy and very different from the traditional style of pop songs I’d generally write.. The structure was much more dynamic, the instruments were more organic/cinematic, and the vocals/writing told a story all on their own (shoutout Mia for the ingenious lyric writing).
It was challenging at times, but ultimately the entire process was something I enjoyed and had a great time creating. Most importantly, the album so far has been very well-received and many people have personally reached out telling me how much they enjoyed the music. It’s crazy to think that I would be getting into composing at this stage. But I guess it’s a pretty cool full-circle moment. Definitely one of the most meaningful projects I have worked on in my career.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a music producer/engineer, composer, and artist. I started my career making hip-hop beats on YouTube. Initially I worked with a lot of rappers and created beat tapes. Since then, I’ve produced a number of tracks in different genres. Most recently, I am a part of a dance/electronic duo (ED.1T).
Throughout my musical journey I’ve played on many stages across the US and in Europe. I’ve also had countless songs featured in movies, tv shows, and sports programs. In addition, songs that I have produced, mixed, and written have accumulated millions of streams worldwide.
The main thing I’d want people to know is that I put my best foot forward and strive for excellence in every project that I am a part of. My brand is quality and I do not release anything that I feel does not fit that standard.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creator is the people you meet and the experiences you have along the way. Sometimes, people get too caught up in the results or ups and downs of the creative journey. I feel like the path of the artist is just that, a different path. And we have to enjoy the journey and accept that its going to ultimately take us to where intended to go in the first place
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I always thought that the more work you put into something or the more time you spent on it, then it would be that much better than everything else you do. Or the better your equipment was, the better your end product would be. But one of my most successful projects was made in my backyard with a busted laptop speaker in about 5 minutes. It showed me that you really never know how long something is going to take. And more importantly, although great equipment can help, sometimes it really doesn’t matter. Magic can strike in the most unexpected times and places.
