We recently connected with Karo Inweh and have shared our conversation below.
Karo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry
The fashion industry and modeling world is an ever-changing business, with different styles, trends, and looks. Being in such a fast-paced industry, you always have to be aware of what’s trending. One trend that I’m loving and I hope it sticks forever is inclusion. I think it has been very apparent to us what the ideal model looks like. Lately, I’ve noticed how things have shifted and now we are opening so many doors for well-deserved people. Being a dark skin black girl stepping into the world, I always had this perception that I had to fight a little harder because of the limitations I felt were put on me. Noticing the very few black girls at a casting call or feeling like the tall white girl is more likely to be picked rather than me because they only wanted a token black girl for the job. I’ve seen how things have changed and how now there is a market for everyone. It’s not just a specific look that is being sought. With inclusion, I do also know that we are not fully where we need to be and you can see that through being a woman of color in the field. Having to ask if certain makeup artists and hair stylists have worked with black women before, in hopes that they are capable of taking care of you for the shoot. Having to bring your stuff knowing that you will be the oddball out. The inclusion is beautiful but we still have a long way to go in this industry.
Karo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi I’m, a model. I’ve been in this industry for 2 years now and I have learned so much about this world and myself. Modeling allowed me to understand the art of fashion and grow into myself. I always laugh about how I became a model because, In all honesty, it was never my game plan. I was discovered by the Entourage agency and things just kept happening after that. I found myself in this world and fell more in love with it as I grew. I thought about modeling when I was younger, but to see myself doing it was far out for me. I am truly blessed for everything that brought me up to this point and believed things were set up in a way to put me in this position. I do not take any of the opportunities I have been given for granted and to be able to be paid for things that you love to do has always been part of my dream life.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My social media plays a big part in my modeling career, especially Instagram. Instagram has helped me grow my brand, show my work, and connect with people. More than half of my bookings come from my social media. As a model or anyone trying to expand their business, it is important to take advantage of the tools that are given to you. Use your social media to grow your brand and show off your worth. Be mindful of what your end goal is and use your socials to reach it.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I pride myself on my professionalism and I believe it’s part of the reason why I have been blessed to work with so many amazing people. It’s important to be mindful of others in this industry. to build a great connection with people and be as professional as possible. Building trust with photographers models, and everyone allows you to be taken seriously in this industry. How I keep trust in people I work with is to be mindful that everyone is working for something and treat others the way you would want to be treated. This includes communicating effectively, being on time for shoots or events, never speaking badly of other people in the industry, showing kindness to everyone, and remaining humble.
