We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Karmin Lane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Karmin , thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
My goal is to leave a legacy with my children that encourages them to take risk and that you can have more than one dream in life! I hope they remember me as fearless, unapologetic and a woman of integrity. Starting a business from scratch is no easy feat, but it is doable. No matter your age, you are never too old to go after a new dream.
Karmin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Karmin Lane, and I am the owner & head charcutier for Krafted By KC. I provided premier charcuterie for events big or small. I specialize in grazing tables, teaching workshops & charcuterie cones (a perfect appetizer for weddings & celebrations) . My charcuterie is not only fresh & delicious, but a work of art. My charcuterie elevates any event and impresses clients who receive boxes. I started this business almost 2 years ago after leaving a career in education. I dreamed of having something of my own and doing work where I could use my creativity. After having our fourth child I also longed to be able to have the freedom to create my own schedule. My business is set apart from others because of the care and detail I put into every order. If your problem is finding someone to provide edible art at your event, then I am the solution! From weddings, corporate events, grand openings or parties, no one will execute like Krafted By KC! I am most proud of the workshops that I teach, because it gives others the skills to do exactly what I do for themselves. Teach a man to fish they say, so that’s exactly what I do!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first launched Krafted By KC, my goal was to do workshops monthly. I soon began to see that people were still very hesitant after COVID. I had to think and pivot into doing virtual charcuterie workshops. They were a hit!! I was able to keep clients safe and still teach the art of creating a charcuterie board. I didn’t give up then, and I refuse to give up now despite the ups and downs of business. I just learned to pivot and think creatively to solve problems.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media can seem very scary when starting off, but I learned to keep posting! I can honestly say that my social media has grown organically. I set myself up on a schedule to post, then I post my work as well as how I create things. Every follower is wanting to learn, see or use my services and I love connecting with people from everywhere. So my advice would be to POST as often as you can, and be genuine. When you are showing others how to do things, or giving authentic advice, it is appreciated. Your “fans” will find you.
