We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Karmen Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Karmen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on to date (beyond my blog) is publishing my first novel “Inexperienced”. I started and finished writing this novel during my freshman year of college in 2014-15. After observing my friends and some of the other students on campus, my creative juices were flowing so I decided to write a story with the main character based on myself and some of the people around me on a day-to-day basis. I had so much fun writing it and editing it over the years so it easily became dear to my heart. It’s my first baby. My husband actually published this book for me as a Christmas/graduation gift in 2020 because he believed in me and my gift before I did. He was one of the few people that got to read it two years before it was published and he fell in love with it. So, I am grateful to him for giving me the push I needed to put myself out there and finally share that story.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well, first, I am a blogger. I started my blog, Child of Purpose, in 2016, again, in college. I was feeling inspired by everything I was personally dealing with and the new people I was meeting during that time. At first, I just wanted to share my journey as a young Christian who was dealing with the peer pressures of life, crushes, and all of the usual stuff. But now I get to share my life as a wife, a mom, a published author, and someone who is pursuing their purpose. I love to write about things that I feel my readers can relate to. I deal with things just like everyone else. In my blog, I am very open about my battle with depression (clinical, postpartum), as well as my struggles in motherhood, and walking in my calling. When viewers come to my website, I want to get the experience of knowing they are not alone. I want them to read my post and think “wow, someone gets me!” because in the end, we all want to know that someone understands us.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Right now, my number one goal is to be able to use my blog as a starting point to start my ministry. Eventually, I want to work with women that share similar struggles that I face (mental health issues, miscarriage, self-doubt, body image issues). I want to create a safe space for women to be who they truly are so we can work together to get past our personal obstacles. I desire for it to be a space where we can all encourage one another. So, I’m looking forward to my blog expanding and opening the path for me to step in that direction.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is seeing my vision and crazy creative mind come to life. There is nothing like it. For me, sometimes I’ll have all these ideas for my blogs and books or short stories and it’ll seem so insane and almost impossible, but once I put them on paper or make a blog post, it makes sense. And I find that it was necessary for me to share them with the world. I especially find it rewarding when people will read my work and tell me things like “thank you so much for sharing your story. I’ve been dealing with this, too so it really encouraged me.” That alone just encourages me so much because when I’m writing it, I’m always hoping that I can help someone, and God always leads the right people to my blog; the ones who need it the most.
