Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karmen Lopez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karmen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I think I’ve always had an interest in photography, but I never really dove deep into all the aspects of it until my husband gifted me my first camera. I was so excited about it, I wanted to learn everything. I spent countless hours on Google, YouTube, and TikTok trying to learn about cameras, lenses, camera settings, lighting, poses, angles, managing a business, and everything else I could think of relating to photography. I think my perseverance and interest in the profession are so helpful to keep me going, there’s always something new to learn as technology and trends change and that’s what makes it exciting. I think the only obstacle I’ve had with learning about photography would be the amount of time I’ve actually spent on perfecting what I do. I have a hard time focusing for long periods of time so I end up doing some here and some there and it feels like it takes me forever to complete a simple task like learning about a camera.

Karmen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, my name is Karmen, I am the owner of Eternal Jade Imagery. I am a lifestyle and aspiring wedding photographer.
I usually photograph families and couples, but I like to try and diversify my sessions with graduates, newborns, birthdays, and even a little bit of cars and scenery. My big dream is to photograph weddings, I love love and want to freeze and cherish those special moments for others. What better place to be to capture moments full of love, right?
I always adore the smiles when someone is having a moment during their session where you can tell they just have this crazy love for their partner or their kids. It’s so heartwarming to see such kindness and compassion.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think a lot of people take photographers for granted. There is so much that goes into it than just pressing a button. You have to purchase your camera equipment, build your business, advertise, drive to and from sessions, spend hours uploading on slow WiFi, spend more hours editing and perfecting every detail, build a website and portfolio. There is so so much more to it and people who book photographers for special moments don’t realize how much actually goes on behind the scenes. The pricing does not reflect just the photos or the session, it’s for everything else as well.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am so so excited to get into the wedding side of photography. I have a second shooter gig coming up soon for the month of October. I know I will be learning a lot from it. I am always striving to learn more and build on my foundation. I want to be the source of the feelings people get when they look back on their special day.
