We were lucky to catch up with Karly Treacy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Karly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Through my thousands of hours of training in Pilates, Yoga, Barre, Strength and Conditioning and the pelvic floor experiences I have endured related to having 3 children within 3 years, I developed a unique approach to training the body that heals patterns of dis-ease and dysfunction while getting us in the best shape we have ever been!!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I don’t think anyone ever sets out to be the face of peeing in your pants, pelvic floor dysfunction and pelvic organ prolapse. However, despite my “fit, strong” body, I found myself suffering from peeing in my pants, back and hip pain and ultimately, my bladder was hanging out of my vagina. My years and thousands of hours studying Pilates, Barre, Yoga and Strength and Conditioning did not educate me in how to prevent this life altering dysfunction. As I was told by numerous Dr’s that the only way out was through surgery that more often than not was unsuccessful, this set me on a trajectory to find out what I didn’t know that lead to these issues and to learn how to heal myself and others! I did heal myself completely! I no longer pee my pants, have any pain and my bladder is back up where it belongs! I want EVERY WOMAN to know that they do NOT have to suffer!
This knowledge has changed how I teach and practice EVERYTHING and lead to me developing my own method. The KT Method, where I teach yoga, fitness and strength with the main focus being pelvic floor health. I take a very holistic approach to movement, understanding that from the feet to the head where we are in space and how we breathe while we are training sets us up for how we move outside of training!! I now see how my pilates, yoga, barre and strength training workouts were actually exacerbating my propensity for pelvic floor symptoms and pelvic organ prolapse.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When you set out to discover and heal your weaknesses there are plenty of setbacks along the way. At first I believed much of the propaganda that doing your “kegels” fixes the issues I was dealing with. They do not. After a bit of studying, I started really targeting all of the muscles of the pelvic floor and working what I called “a kegel done right” recruiting all of the muscles of the pelvic floor, but that only minimized my symptoms. Eventually, I looked at how all of the muscles that support and integrate with and within the pelvis and the role they played in pelvic floor function and this was a big game changer! All in, with many confronting setbacks in my healing and observation of myself and how I was experiencing life, it took me 9-12 months to relieve all of my symptoms. Cut to 9 years later, at nearly 46 years old and hormones misbehaving, I felt some of the old “stuff” trying to come back. I developed a theory that as perimenopausal women lose estrogen, and the tissues lose collagen and elastin, that the pelvic floor starts to reside in a descended state. I began working to create ascension in the Pelvic Floor in my training and once again ALL symptoms have subsided!
It is a journey. Once a pathway is paved, it is easy for the body to fall back into old dysfunctional habits and patterns. Consistent, conscious, commitment to moving and breathing well truly changes how we move through and experience life!
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back knowing what I know now, I would definitely do the same thing, but I would be working to prevent these issues in myself and others! The majority of what we do today in fitness and exercise really does not support good pelvic floor and core health.
