We recently connected with Karlie Muncrief and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Karlie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When I was younger, I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. You know how kids fantasize about being president or doctors…nothing ever felt right for me. As I got older, I realized that I needed to find my footing, so I opted for teaching. There was a special part of educating that allowed my creativity to come out. I loved the reading and writing aspects of my job. I taught my students to find their inner creativity, too. After a year, thanks to the local administration and politics, I decided to leave my teaching position. I had no idea what to do or where I was “supposed to be.” My mother in law owns a med spa and hired me on while I tried to figure my life out. I absolutely fell in love with medical aesthetics. What really inspired me was the confidence and happiness that was instilled in each patient – they left feeling beautiful. As time went on, my position went from front desk, to manager, to strictly focusing on words. Like when I was a teacher, this part of my job allowed my creativity to pour out. My constant goal was to intrigue readers and draw them in. They had a problem, and there was a solution that would leave them thrilled. One night, I was going through google trying to learn different writing careers. I stumbled upon copywriting and was absolutely mind blown that it was a job. I had never heard of it before. I spent months researching, taking courses, and learning everything I could about this new discovery. I felt in my heart that my time working at the med spa was coming to an expiration. Working with family is difficult, and I knew I needed to focus on my passion and happiness. I took a risk and left. I was terrified. But I kept going. I took more courses, on a whim, I got my business license, and I started promoting myself as a copywriter. Taking the risk, leaving to comfort of a paycheck – is not necessarily what I’d recommend to everyone. But when you know in your gut, and your heart, that it’s time to jump…you jump. Going in a direction I’ve never gone before was, of course, terrifying. But I’ve never felt more fulfilled.

Karlie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Karlie, and I’m a copywriter. I’ve always been passionate about writing. I remember being in elementary school, sitting at my little desk, writing little chapter books. They would be about what I imagined middle school as, or life as an older sister. It was my escape from the real world.
As I got older, I started blogging in my free time – never realizing that my passion could ever turn into a career. When I stumbled upon the world of copywriting, I knew it was the route I wanted to take.
My niche has always been beauty – botox + filler, skincare, makeup – You can say I’m a true girl-girl at heart. I managed a med spa for years, and there I learned the ins and outs of medical aesthetics.
I felt as though I could write in a way that would target the needs, wants, and desires of the audience. “Uncover your true confidence,” was my themed mindset. I like to think of the role of copywriters as paid problem solvers. What I mean by this, is there are multiple people benefiting from the work – the business is able to grow and expand their audience / prospects, and readers are able to recognize that their is a solution for them.
If I was able to:
1) Help a business gain traction and find their brand voice
2) Help someone find their confidence through words that lead them to a business / product / service…
Then my cup was filled.
I’m proud to say that my writing style has become very versatile. I love writing for beauty companies, but I can absorb a brand and write to fit their needs. With the help of both business big and small, I’ve been able to grow a portfolio that portrays my authentic style.
I want future clients or business partners to understand that I’m anti “spammy, salsey, yucky.” Readers deserve to feel as though each message was designed and written directly for them. Relatability, trust, and genuinity are what I hold close to my heart when creating a piece of work.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I honestly believe starting with clients who know and trust me already was able to get my business snowball growing. When I first started promoting myself as a professional – it was not easy, and I was scared. You feel like a small fish in a big pond in the beginning. Where do you start?! Do you freelance or opt for a big company?! Why wasn’t there someone there to hold your hand and tell you what to do?! I finally decided to reach out to local businesses I had worked for, as an employee, in the past. They already knew my work ethic and writing style, so why not try freelancing for them?
It worked! They are not only returning clients, but are happy to put word out there to nationwide business friends about me.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Calling all copywriters! Two words: Alex Cattoni. I learned who she was by stumbling upon her youtube channel years ago. Her short videos were step 1 for me. All of my credentials, certificates, and the beginning of my professional portfolio was thanks to her and her courses.
I HIGHLY recommend pouring into your education. Buy the books, watch the videos, pay for the classes. Future you will be thankful that you did.
Alex hosts an annual 9 week, in-depth class each year. I wish I had, had the guts to take it when I learned about it 2 years prior. Maybe I would have found my footing sooner. BUT, I don’t live on regrets and trust that things fall into place in their own time. When I did take her Copy Posse Launch Pad class, I felt more capable and confident in myself, than I ever had before.
