We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karla Lucero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karla below.
Karla , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
When I first started doing make-up application and hairstyling, I would say it was in middle school going into high school. I remember I would get my friends and I ready and we would just take pictures to post as our new profile pictures, it was something I loved to do and from that point on I knew I had found a calling of mine.
In high school, my senior year I remember offering friends hair and make up services… I had absolutely no idea that years later I would really be doing what I love and sharing my talents with more people.
After high school I enrolled into cosmetology and started taking real clientele, I was doing haircuts, hair-color and doing bigger transformations and my passion just grew from there…. I knew I wanted to do something different, I didn’t want to necessarily work in a salon and knew I hated working long hours… so I decided to launch Kayulu Beauty.
A freelance traveling make-up artist & hairstylist, I bring the salon to you!!! I started saving up so much and started building my kit to make traveling easier, I created my own website and put my prices together, I have been working on my business for about 4 years and every day I see it grow little by little, it’s definitely been a process… what started as a little hobby / side job eventually turned around to become something I am passionate about and now being one of my main jobs.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello, my name is Karla Lucero. I’m a freelance hairstylist and make-up artist located in San Antonio, TX. I was born in Las Vegas, NV and in hopes to make my way back… I got into the beauty industry at a young age, I got into make up and loved how it would just enhance beauty when needed and once I was old enough to enroll into cosmetology that’s what I did.
I was taught how to style hair, color and cut and little did I know… I had a talent for it.
I love to create new looks, whether it’s soft to a pop of color…. I want my clients to feel better and more confident after getting their services done with me.
I am most proud of taking risks and opportunities when it comes to my artistry, I love a challenge and it brings me so much joy when I’m able to execute what it is my clients want.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my audience on social media has not been the easiest, I’m most definitely not where I want to be. However, most of my audience is a lot of my family, friends, clients and so many who just simply support me for being myself.
I do my absolute best with being my most authentic self and portraying that on to my social media, word of mouth has been successful as well and I make sure to have my business cards on hand so I can share when I’m out and about and soon after I get followers, and likes from people I stumbled upon and introduced myself to.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first got out of cosmetology, I was so ready to just graduate, pass my exams and get out of there with my license but unfortunately that’s not at all what happened.
I have bad anxiety when it comes to test taking and the first exam you take is a written exam… when I tell you I failed not once or twice but close to like five attempts, I was ready to just close that chapter of my life. I moved on with life, tried to just steer in a whole different direction but the guilt was getting to me, how could I just quit something that I love to do?
A couple of years later, I finally said… what’s another attempt? That was the day that I passed…. I couldn’t believe it… it’s so much easier to give up then to get up and keep going but the outcome of it is so much more worth it.
