We recently connected with Karla-Camille Sarmiento and have shared our conversation below.
Karla-Camille, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
There were many things that my parents did right for me and my journey but there are two things that stand out to me. The first that had an impact on me was their support in everything I did – no matter what activity it was. Whether it was a sports competition, a dance recital, a theater performance or a glee club concert, seeing my parents in the audience really boosted my confidence and made me want to show what I was working on that year. It also reassured me that anything that I was passionate about or something of high importance, my parents will always support me no matter what.
Another thing that my parents did right will be said in the words of my dad, “you must learn everything that the job entails and to know the job inside and out.” In every job that I held, I always tried to learn my job to the best of my ability and to find faster, efficient ways to make my job easier. This truly has had an impact on me because no matter what job I have, I am constantly learning and trying to make workflows better for the team/department.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi All. My name is Karla-Camille Sarmiento. I was born and raised in Elmhurst, NY. I’m currently a Clinical Business Analyst while being an actress/model on the side. I got into the healthcare IT industry because I has to do a career switch after not getting into OT school after graduating college. I got encouraged to getting my Master’s in Health Informatics and then I joined this society – Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). I was able to network with members that were experienced professionals in the field and one of the members was able to refer me to her department for a position. After many interviews, I was offered the job and I have been in my position for almost 4 years.
How I got into acting/modeling – I always had this dream of becoming a actress/model. I did glee club and theater when I was in high school and college. So performing was something I wanted to do. Recently, I joined many Facebook groups for local model and actor groups that were either looking for actors to do short films in my area or needing a model to try some new concepts for photos and trying a photographer’s new equipment. It has been a great experience so far and I have met so many people from doing acting and modeling.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training/knowledge, the most helpful for succeeding in my field is to be always open and adapting to any changes. There are so many changes that can happen in the healthcare industry that you have to quickly change your methods in order to reflect the changes. It’s important to adopt any new changes set by leadership and apply them to your role. For acting and modeling, the most helpful for succeeding in the field is to network with any professionals – models, photographers, actors, etc. I have done so much networking, and I was given the opportunity to star in some short films that coming soon and work on other short films and to build my modeling portfolio.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I think no matter what, being in healthcare is something that I was called to do especially with having many family members in healthcare. In terms of profession, I think I would like to be in the laboratory and help with research. It would be cool to help for the cure of either cancer or any incurable disease. I always had a fascination with laboratories and doing research especially seeing many medical dramas.
