We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karizma Stylez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karizma below.
Hi Karizma, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
The most important lesson I learned at a job is one that transformed my life forever. It’s a lesson about courage, resilience, and the unwavering belief in one’s own potential. Looking back, it feels as though every moment in my journey was preparing me for this revelation.
For years, I excelled in customer service roles. I chose these jobs because I genuinely love helping people—educating them, guiding them, and making their days a little brighter. Whether it was over the phone or face-to-face, I poured my heart into my work. I was always punctual, always striving to exceed expectations. I recall one time, I had been a lil tardy for work for the first time and my employer sent the local police department to my house for a wellness check!
My dedication didn’t go unnoticed; I earned raises, accolades, and even became the go-to person for training new employees. My calls were often used as examples of excellence within the company. I felt valued—or so I thought.
Then, one ordinary day, everything changed. Without warning, I was let go. No explanations, no second chances—just a cold reminder that to the company, I was merely a number. A cog in the machine, easily replaced. It was devastating. But amidst the heartbreak and confusion, a quiet voice inside me whispered: *This is your chance. This is your freedom.*
Growing up, I had a natural gift for styling and braiding hair. I wasn’t just the go-to hairstylist for my classmates before sports games; I also styled the ladies at church and even my own hair from a young age. It was my passion, my art. Life circumstances had kept me from pursuing cosmetology school after high school, but 12 years later, at 30 years old, the door was open. What had felt like a loss was, in fact, an opportunity—a chance to turn my lifelong dream into reality.
I went home that day and shared everything my supportive spouse. With a mix of fear and excitement, I declared my intention: I would enroll in cosmetology school, earn my license, and build a business where I could serve my own clientele. No longer would I allow a company or anyone else to dictate my worth or my future.
The journey wasn’t easy. The cosmetology program required 1,800 hours, and many of my classmates were younger and had been attending for years. But I was determined. I gave it my all, pouring my passion into every lesson and every practice session. In just 10 months—record time—I completed the program. On the very day I received my license, I stepped into a private suite I had prepared for my hair care services. My first client as a licensed cosmetologist sat in my chair that same day.
I can’t describe the emotions I felt in that moment. Overjoyed, proud, and deeply grateful, I realized I had reclaimed my power. I had turned a painful setback into the launchpad for my dreams. Today, I wake up every morning knowing I’m doing what I was meant to do. I’m more than a number. I’m an artist, an entrepreneur, and a woman who dared to follow her heart.
My story isn’t just about losing a job; it’s about finding myself. It’s about realizing that sometimes, the end of one chapter is the beginning of something far greater. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: Face your fears, trust your talents, and never settle for less than the life you’ve always dreamed of. You are worth it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Imagine being just two years old and discovering a gift that would shape the course of your life. My journey started earlier than most. I’ve known how to do hair for as long as I can remember. My older sister loves to tell this story and it’s my favorite: one day, while babysitting me, she turned her back for just a moment. When my mom came home, she found my tiny head full of perfectly braided strands. Assuming my sister had done it, my mom asked her to undo them, but my sister quickly corrected her—those braids were my own creation. Even at that age, my hands knew the rhythm and art of hairstyling.
That story has stayed with me as a testament to my innate talent and passion. It is more than a memory; it’s the foundation of who I am. I’ve always been ambitious and passionate, though I didn’t fully realize it until adulthood. Growing up, I styled everyone—my classmates, church members, family, and, of course, myself. I loved the process, the transformation, and the confidence it brought to those around me. But life had its twists and turns, and my dream of becoming a professional hairstylist was put on hold. Still, my passion never wavered.
When I finally earned my cosmetology license, I knew I had to trust my instincts and bet on myself. I skipped the traditional route and went straight into booth renting. I wanted my own reputation, built from the ground up, with no compromises. I rented my first private suite for $250, obtained my city and state business licenses, and launched Karizma Stylez. I had no idea how, who, or what would shape my path, but I trusted my destiny and moved with intention and purpose.
My strategy was as bold as it was simple. I invited the clients I had worked with as a student to join me, offering them discounts and a referral program they couldn’t refuse. I prioritized quality, offering a 48-hour satisfaction guarantee and exceptional customer service. To foster loyalty, I introduced a program where clients could lock in their initial pricing as long as they stayed with me. At first, I worked tirelessly—early mornings, late nights, weekdays, and weekends. Over time, I found a rhythm that worked for both my clients and my family.
As I built my business, I began to notice something deeper about my work. Many clients came to me with unrealistic views of their hair or deeply rooted insecurities about their appearance. Some had experienced traumatic hair journeys and felt beautiful only when hiding behind certain styles. I realized that my work wasn’t just about hair—it was about helping people shift their mindsets. I started guiding my clients toward embracing their natural beauty and choosing healthier styles that promoted growth and confidence. Watching them transform, not just externally but internally, fed my soul. Karizma, the growth mindset coach had emerged.
One day, I received a heartfelt message from a client that changed everything. She shared how our conversations during her hair appointments had transformed her life. She had reflected on the perspectives I shared, which inspired her to pursue a new job and find true love. She credited her newfound happiness and authenticity to the perspectives I shared with her as well as the questions I asked that provoked deeper thinking. She blessed me with her willingness to share the results of our sessions. This wasn’t an isolated experience—many clients had told me how my guidance helped them show up for themselves and face their fears.
This feedback sparked a new passion in me. I went back to the drawing board and became a certified life coach, investing thousands of dollars into training and credentials to refine my ability to guide and mentor. I wanted to be intentional with my gifts, so I created The Mind Myself Method. It’s the culmination of all my passions: haircare, coaching\mentoring and personal growth. I offer “hairapy” sessions, where clients leave feeling renewed, not just looking their best, but feeling their best inside and out.
Today, I’m proud to say that I’m changing lives. The Mind Myself Method is about more than hair; it’s about helping people embrace their truth with self-acceptance, self-love, and self-development. There is abundance in growth. I ensure my clients aren’t hiding behind a hairstyle but ‘Mindinding’ themselves, living authentically in their beauty and strength.
Infusing my gifts of haircare and coaching on this journey has been an emotional rollercoaster, filled with challenges and triumphs. But every twist and turn has led me to a place of fulfillment and purpose. The Mind Myself Method is a safe place for transparency and transformation. Growth is beautiful yet challenging at times and I’m here to walk along side you during the difficult and celebratory moments. I’m grateful to serve, that we may grow prosperously and live abundantly, inside and out.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Before becoming a professional entrepreneur, maintaining a strong image and reputation with unmatched integrity was always important to me. Once I earned my cosmetology license, it was time to put my skills to the test. While most professionals in my field build their clientele through commission-based positions at established salons, I knew that wasn’t the path for me. During my time on the clinic floor at school, I heard countless horror stories from clients about their experiences with hairstylists at these salons. Those stories made it clear that I couldn’t risk my reputation by joining an environment where my values and standards might be compromised.
Despite the advice of my school director, I decided to go straight into booth renting. I understood I had just one chance to build a solid, untarnished reputation, and I wasn’t going to let anything jeopardize that. My passion and genuine care for my craft became the foundation of my success. This was my livelihood, and finally being able to live out my passion meant I couldn’t afford to fail.
I prioritized providing every client with exceptional customer service. My consultations were thorough, ensuring I had a complete and clear understanding of what each client wanted. I committed to continuous self-development, guaranteeing my clients received consistent, high-quality service every time. I refined my techniques and became known for my efficiency, getting clients in and out quickly without ever compromising on quality.
Establishing boundaries was another crucial step in building my brand. I was selective about the clients I worked with, ensuring we were a good fit before taking them on. This approach allowed me to create a harmonious and respectful relationship with my clientele, fostering trust and loyalty.
I take immense pride in my work and genuinely enjoy every client I serve. My values and ethics keep me rooted and grounded in my gifts. My dedication to maintaining high standards and exceeding expectations has not only built my reputation but also allowed me to thrive as a Natural Haircare Specialist and Growth Mindset Coach.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The concepts presented in *The Power of Now* by Eckhart Tolle and *The Four Agreements* by Don Miguel Ruiz profoundly transformed my thinking and mindset. *The Power of Now* helped me embrace the present moment as a powerful tool for personal growth and clarity, allowing me to experience a deeper sense of expansion and appreciate the beauty of life in every moment.
Similarly, *The Four Agreements* provided a practical framework for personal success:
1. **Be impeccable with your word.**
2. **Do not take anything personally.**
3. **Do not make assumptions.**
4. **Always do your best.**
By practicing these principles daily, I’ve created a foundation for continuous growth and fulfillment, regardless of my professional endeavors. I love discovering books that inspire change, but the true reward comes from applying their teachings to my life—and seeing them work.
