We recently connected with Karina Mosqueda and have shared our conversation below.
Karina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My whole life I tried to play it safe, whether it be with sports, at home, or in school. I never was the one to take risks. I worked in the dental field for 12 years and was also a student in the evenings. After some time it really dawned on me that I wasn’t’ happy anymore. I was constantly stressed and daydreaming about the “what if’s?”. So after a huge spiritual awakening in 2020, I decided to take the biggest risk and drop out of school, leave my stable job and decided to dedicate myself to helping others heal from deep rooted traumas through Reiki, a type of energy healing. Three years later, I am the happiest I have ever been, fulfilling my wishes of helping the world heal, finding freedom in my everyday and thriving in every way possible. What I realized: was that the old way of doing things was not working for me, I had to pave my own way even if that meant losing everything I felt comfortable with and taking a risk on my own dreams.
Karina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Karina. I was born and raised in Los Angeles CA, first generation Mexican-American. I grew up in a household where the best was always expected of me. I am also the oldest sibling so that has always added a bit more pressure in everything that I do. I always knew I wanted to help heal the world. As a kid, I used to take in animals and nurse them back to health. I would sit down and read about why people got sick and how I could help them. I also really used to enjoy listening to my peers and giving them advice on whatever they needed. Living in Los Angeles, being such a diverse place gave me the opportunity to see the different realities many people face. So I spent most of my time wondering how I could bring more joy to other peoples lives. At the time I had no idea that my journey would lead me to break barriers I never thought were possible.
In highschool, I really struggled to keep my grades up and knew medical school would be a no-go. Shortly after graduating highschool, I joined a trade school and did a dental assistant program. It came to me so easily and for the first time it felt like I knew what I was doing. Eventually I went back to college and found myself taking on more than I can handle. It felt like too much at the time and in hopes of releasing some stress through a body massage I was introduced to Reiki by my therapist.
She explained Reiki to me and even though I did not understand the idea of energy at the time, I felt different. I felt lighter, like I could breathe again. Three months after my first session, I decided to get certified and study all things energy work. One year after that, I quit my job and decided this was my path. Fast forward three years later I believe I am living and standing in my true purpose.
Today I am a Reiki Master, I guide others on finding their own purpose by tapping into their energy, helping them release internal blockages and shift their mindset. Reiki works on a holistic level meaning mind, body and soul. Most of society lives a life full of stress, has an immense amount of physical pains, and mental health is at an all time high. We are energetic beings, and our body consists of a constant flow of energy. We have seven main energy centers that connect to other parts of our body. When these energy centers are blocked, due to traumas-memories that our body holds on too. We can’t function the way we are meant to. This is when stress, brain fog, physical pains and chronic illness start to happen. During a Reiki session I tap into these energy centers and help maintain the proper flow of energy all throughout your body. Reiki is just like working out, where we have to work on different areas of the body, some less or more than others, and change our diet and lifestyle to see further results. Most of my work is virtual. I teach Reiki and certify students on the practice., I do 1:1 Reiki sessions, provide spiritual coaching and most recently, also offer past life regressions. Sessions where we tap into your subconscious through a guided hypnosis and see your past lives and further try to understand where certain fears, behaviors and patterns that you might not understand, come from.
If you asked me 10 years ago that I would have my own business in energy healing, I would laugh. It hasn’t been an easy ride. I’ve had to push through my own healing and deal with my own traumas. I’ve had to release people, jobs, old mentalities, old ways of being and truly believe in myself and my ability to help others so I could be here today sharing my story. Nothing in life comes easy but if you believe enough, anything is possible.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to unlearn has been that even if we are raised a certain way or look a certain way does not mean we can’t challenge our reality and thrive in whatever it is we seek. Growing up I was always told, you have to act, look, speak, a certain way in order to get places. What my elders said, went, no questions asked. Life to them is work hard, go to school, get married, have kids and continue the cycle of work until you die. I can understand how that was a way of living in the past but in todays society we have more of an open window and we just have to be willing to go all in regardless of what people will say or think. When we stay in this box that the rest of society has built for us, we miss out on so many life altering opportunities. Making friends all over the world, connecting with like minded individuals, having the freedom to travel, not work so hard and trusting that my time for marriage and kids will be when I’m ready and not when society chooses has been the biggest positive outcome for myself. I still struggle expressing my truth and what I want out of life but I always try to remind myself that this is my life and by honoring my needs, I am also honoring the needs of those who came before me.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Being authentic. Just showing up wether in person or social media as my genuine self. This means talking about my journey, being vulnerable and sharing my experiences even when my whole body is trembling and my mind is yelling no. I’m. a very silly individual, who doesn’t like much seriousness and we tend to think that being serious and professional is how we will gain the clients or sales. For me it has been the complete opposite, when I show up as I would around those who truly know me, that’s when it feels like my ideal clients find me. I think there’s so much beauty in not just seeing your therapist as just a therapist but also a human who has fun and struggles in life just like you do.
