Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karina Michel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Karina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I just worked on a documentary project this month called “The Way Home”. This is a non profit organization in my community that I have been a part of and volunteered with in the past, so it made it extra special to put a film together for them for their 20 year fundraiser. They offer transitional housing for women in crisis and I volunteered with their Jobs for Life program, which was just amazing to be a part of. It was a little challenging to do as I felt so close to their mission , but I can honestly say that the project came together so beautifully and flawlessly. The crew and everyone involved gave it their all. It was everything I hoped it would be and more.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started off as a model – my Mom would take me to auditions in Ohio and that lead to working as an actress and model in NYC and LA. I knew from the age of 3 I wanted to act and work in the movie industry, it was just a case of how that would happen. I worked hard in LA, studying with acting coaches and learning a lot on set which lead to roles in Tv shows and movies. In 2010 I started producing and now have been lucky to produce many films and documentaries around the world through my company Tallulah Films. I l still love to act- I did 5 films this year. Four of those were Christmas movies, which were a lot of fun and I can’t wait to do more.
I co-own the company Fresh Patch, write for Rolling Stone’s Culture Council and do my podcast “Coffee With Karina – Entertainment Unfiltered.”
Above all I think it’s important to dream big, enjoy life, and enjoy it to the fullest. Leading a healthy lifestyle and having a positive mindset can lead to great things.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I can’t do everything. This past year has been challenging in that way because the more success a person has the more opportunities will come their way. I definitely have this fear of missing out sometimes! It’s been taking the time to ask myself does it make sense to do this? Do I have the time and the energy to do it right? And most importantly.. Do I love this and have to do it? Saying no isn’t always a bad thing as it leaves more room for the right things.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Everyone has had disappointments or has been knocked down at some point. It’s just some people dwell on it and others are more resilient. I’d rather know I went for it and gave it a good shot, than have regrets or keep asking myself “What if?” I think resilience is something that can get stronger over time. The more you have that mindset, the easiest it becomes to bounce back.
