We recently connected with Karina-Lynne Horton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Karina-Lynne, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Am I happy as a business owner? Absolutely. I think the ultimate scam is working 50 years for someone else and having a decade in retirement to “enjoy life”. Now that doesn’t mean that business ownership is alway butterflies and rainbows. It is certainly a roller coaster and one you have to learn to ride but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
There are days when you have to have extreme self dedication because that bed is incredibly comfortable and it would be so much easier to stay there.
But then I remember being in an uncomfortable desk, in a stuffy cubicle, where the fluorescent lights would give me a terrible headache and that does not make me want to have a regular job.
Sitting in traffic and only having an hour for lunch does not make me want to have a regular job.
I’d rather work for myself where I call the shots and work from the comfort of my home or front porch than go back to the 9-5 grind.
Karina-Lynne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In short, I help women create successful online high ticket businesses for financial freedom and work-life balance.
I retired myself from Corporate America at the age of 26. Had my daughter at 27 and became a six figure earner in my industry with barely any followers and zero previous experience.
And truly I fell into direct sales. I didn’t know anything about it and had zero sales experience when I decided that if I made just enough money to make a car payment], then that was enough success for me.
After six years in low ticket sales, I saw an opportunity to really grow in high ticket sales and I jumped in. Seeing the vision of being able to make six figures in a month versus a year truly inspired me to step outside of my comfort zone and go all in on the scariest jump of my life.
My determination is I think what sets me apart from others. I’ve been pushed down more times than I can even begin to count. And it started from a very young age, so when I set my mind to something I do whatever it takes to make it happen. I go all in and give it 110% no matter what.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I love social media and that might seem so interesting because there are so many people out there that hate it. But in today’s day, social media is what is making the average mom at home with her kids, hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I started with a little 1,000 friends on Facebook and those were mainly high school friends and college friends.
From there I grew a platform and created know, like and trust with my network. Now across my most used platforms I have over 50K followers.
I really hold a deep appreciation for real ambition, unwavering self-belief, and the pursuit of a life that blends hard work with the freedom to savor precious moments. And that is what I’ve built my platform on.
For someone just starting out I’d say to show up, every single day. Show your face, talk about your life. You don’t need to air your dirty laundry but your network needs to know who you are and what your values are to then make a choice to work with you.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Whew, this is a good one, The lesson I had to unlearn was success. I went into business thinking everyone’s version of success was the same as mine. I wanted time freedom, I wanted the six figures and now working towards the seven. I wanted the top rank status’ and I wanted to help every single person I worked with achieve that same thing.
It wasn’t until I did some deep inner work and had some tough conversations with people I really looked up to, that I realized not everyone’s version of success was the same as mine and it was my job to help them achieve THEIR version of success, not mine.
I think to be a great leader you have to start by understanding the importance of meeting people where they are, and helping them grow from there.
