We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karina Heyward. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karina below.
Hi Karina, thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage all my social medias. It helps me stay in control on what I want to put out. I also love editing my own videos and photos. It’s like another creative outlet.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a 30 year old Latina who is a paraprofessional, makeup artist and sales homemade cheesecakes. I got into the cheesecake business because my ex husband bragged to a chef how good my cheesecakes were. The chef came and spoke to me about selling them. The rest is history. The thing that makes me proud is when I get someone who does not like cheesecakes but they like mines.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I have never been a cake person. So for me, my birthday is either with a flan or a cheesecake. Cheesecake is my favorite dessert. One day when I was still in high school I decided I wanted to learn how to make it. So I looked up different recipes. Like most home cooks, in time, I tweaked it and came up with how I like to make it.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When my ex husband and I decided to split everything pretty much got put on hold. I temporarily closed so I could get back on my feet in my personal life. Three months later, I got with my ex husband and we worked out a business plan for me to continue to sale the cheesecakes at his store.
