Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karina Bromberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Dance, music and artistic expression has been apart of my life for as long as I can remember, but the dream of pursuing this path professionally was only a dream and as a kid, I hadn’t thought of it seriously. I come from what would be considered a traditional place and this kind of career wasn’t something I saw near me. However, when my family moved to Canada, and I went back to dancing, I met lots of people who pursue a creative path professionally and my horizons started to expand. I started treating it professionally and invested in my training, travelled and pursued connections and opportunities to try and make it my career and reality. It was my trip to Los Angeles, in April 2021 that completely solidified dancing and creating is my purpose. I participated in a local showcase, COVID-times so we were still wearing masks and getting tested, under the direction of Diana Matos. Training for a performance of this caliber and quality, pushed my body in ways I hadn’t before and being in LA on my own for an extended amount of time, I just remember feeling so in my purpose.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Karina and I am a multi-disciplinary artist and creator. Within dance, I mainly work in Film & TV, and recently wrapped my work on Descendants 5 as part of skeleton crew and ensemble dancer. Previously I danced on Monster High 1 & 2, Riverdale and more. In the past 2 years I have established myself as a choreographer and show director and created “rishon.” Art Showcase, which has had three successful shows and brought many communities and creatives together into one space, in an innovate new way.
In 2024 I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a business degree concentrating in accounting, an area I have also worked in for the last 4 years and draw many connections to the show-business world! I enjoy video-editing, content creating and aspire to keep expanding into many more medias and dimensions in the creative and business world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love the freedom that comes with it. There are so many sides to our personality, being, environment and interests and creating art allows me to tap in to the various sides of me. One day I might feel more cutey and girly, the other I might be in my masculine and dominant bag, and the infinite possibilities of moving and creating (and music!) allow me to explore and express the different sides of me.
I usually feel that the world likes to box or label people, usually as one or another, and often feel one label doesn’t quite apply. Through my art I feel that I have the power and freedom to break that, and just be.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I am the first in my family to choose and pursue a creative path, which often times can (and is) questioned, doubted or goes mis-understood. I believe it’s a matter of explaining and introducing, showing non-creatives what could be, how the industry works, who inspires me and my passion behind the journey. I tried to figure out what it was that was making my family doubtful or scared at times, and made sure to research and explain to them in a manner that made sense from their point of view. For example – at first, they didn’t understand why when I have an audition I have to do my very best efforts to make it to it, just for the chance to be seen. I explained it is similar to a job interview, you don’t always get it, but you want to show up and bring your resume and wear your best clothes to try and get the job. And who knows – maybe that employer will remember you! That happened to me multiple times. I always try and show the heart behind the work, and expand non-creatives world about how I think of my art, my day, my practices when I’m not making art.. etc. We can find many similarities.
