We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karina (a.k.a. Kay Vixn). We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karina below.
Hi Karina, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Ever since I can remember I’ve loved to sing and dance. Music has always been an important part of my Colombian culture and it developed as a passion for me at an early age. After taking a few piano classes I learned to compose very instinctively, writing down my feelings and coming up with melodies to play along. I remember writing my 1st song when I was 8.
Although I wish I would’ve have had the means to continue with music classes while young, which would have sped up the process into becoming a well rounded musician, every part of my journey has led me to where I am today as an artist.
I started music production in my teen years, and had to work everyday after school to afford a computer, production softwares, a microphone and all my music equipment. I spent all my free time learning to produce and record songs in my home-studio. Some of the most essential skills I developed as a singer-songwriter/ producer are time management, determination, technical knowledge of music and recording, and an exceptional ear for music!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a multifaceted Colombian artist, singer-songwriter, producer, and performer. I started in the industry as the lead singer of a live music band in South Florida at the age of 19, and continued collaborating with local artists and producers throughout the years. My areas of expertise include singing, songwriting, producing, and recording both melodies and lyrics. What sets me apart as an artist is my ability to create different styles and genres of music in English and Spanish, from alternative, pop, electronic, and Latin among others. I am also an avid dancer and performer, specializing in aerial silks and acro yoga.
I am most proud of my dedication and passion for music for over two decades. I have a home-studio where I am able to produce, record, and collaborate with people all over the world remotely. I recently released a new latin single in Spanish called “Natural”, and currently working on releasing my next song called “Mandala” all after having my first baby just last year! I am proud to continue pursuing my love for music all while building a beautiful family.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the gratification that comes from creating something new and unique from scratch. Knowing that no one else in the world can do what I do, the way I do it. Every single artist is unique in their own light and deserves all the recognition and support from their surrounding communities. It takes courage to pursue your dreams as an artist, yet it is one of the most rewarding feelings to follow your heart and do what you love.
Personally, I am the happiest and most fulfilled when I am performing and doing what I love. I love knowing my voice is being heard and my music is stamped in time as an everlasting legacy of my talent and existence. Music has the power to enhance and transform our lives, it also inspires and motivates others. As humans, music and art are deeply connected to our souls and I believe we are all artists at heart, we just need to believe in ourselves and trust our intuition!

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One of the most important books that has greatly impacted my philosophy in life is “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. I learned to surrender to the present moment, accept, and embrace every single situation that I am in. It truly gave me a new perspective on life and helped me become a better version of myself every single day. On the other hand, I pursued an educational career in Business Management and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Finance from Florida international University. Altogether my studies significantly impacted my management and intrapreneurial thinking, allowing me to better understand the the music industry and grow as an artist and professional in different fields.
