Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karin Rošker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karin, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I thought my first employment will be a regular job and then later on maybe I will own my own business. But then life played it’s role and I started my own business and never had—or at least for now—a regular job.
Owning a business comes with pros and cons but at the end of the day, it’s worth it. I am really happy I am able to be a freelancer and work for myself. It is a freedom, even though it doesn’t always seem to be. I remember having an internship in The Netherlands, going to work at night and coming home at night, freelancing beside it—so absolutely overworking, and I told myself “I don’t want this, I want to have a life outside work”. After that I took some vacation and then I planned to find a job. When I returned back to Slovenia there was a freelance project waiting for me. It was a project I did for my Master’s and it continued. So I had an opportunity to start as a freelancer. The beginning seemed really scary—I often worried about paying taxes and everything else that comes with it. I had a part time job outside of my profession for first three months, but then projects started trickling in together and I continued working within my field.
Freelancing isn’t always predictable—some months are better than others—but instead of feeling scared, I now feel grateful. I gave myself the opportunity to be my own boss, create my own schedule, and determine my own worth.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My creative journey began in childhood, a time when play and imagination were an everyday part of life. As I grew, learning and studying creative disciplines became key milestones along the way, especially Erasmus+ program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, Poland, that I did during my Masters studies in the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana.
I am proud and grateful that I took the leap into freelancing. It has been a journey full of learning, challenges, and growth. Seeing my designs come to life in the real world—whether on store shelves, in print, or online—is incredibly rewarding.
Today, my focus is on graphic design, working on a diverse range of projects. My goal is to create work that is not only visually appealing but also functional, meaningful, and aligned with the client’s brand values. That way I can help businesses and individuals to tell their story visually through thoughtful and impactful design.
Being a graphic designer is an exciting and dynamic profession—it often feels like having multiple careers in one, as each project introduces me to new fields and challenges. This constant variety is what makes the work so stimulating and rewarding.
I really enjoy working with open-minded clients who have a clear vision, value collaboration, and trust in my creative process.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For me, the best source for new clients is not through social media or website, but through good work and good word. Word-of-mouth recommendations come from real connections and firsthand experiences, and that’s why they are so invaluable. When clients genuinely appreciate the work and collaboration process, they naturally share their positive impressions with others. This kind of growth has been the most rewarding way for me to attract new collaborations.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is genuinely loving what I do and seeing the impact of my work on other businesses and their growth. It is incredibly fulfilling to see your ideas turn into visuals that look great and serve a real purpose—to help brands stand out, connect with their audience, and evolve. Knowing that my work plays a role in someone’s success makes the creative process even more meaningful. It’s a constant reminder that design isn’t just about aesthetics, but about communication, strategy, and impact—and being part of that journey is what makes this career so inspiring.
