We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Karin Capellan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Karin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
When I started my business. I went into business during Covid. This alone was a huge risk to take considering the future was unknown, the world shut down and we were living in fear; Who knew what opportunities we would have or essentially what would happen the next week or even if we would live past the following month so starting a business was a huge risk and I didn’t fully understand the the idea behind owning a business, but I’ve learned a lot along the way

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We started this party rental and balloon business in July 2020 right in the middle of the pandemic. I am a flight attendant by trade and during the pandemic as you know, a lot of flights Were canceled due to Covid restrictions most countries shut their borders, which left me in a very weird position because I didn’t know what to do or what else I can do to make money. Around this time I went to a party rentals auction for a company who had been around for 30yrs Covid had forced them to shut their doors there I noticed there was a lot of money being thrown around within this industry. Of course it was questionable because this huge company that had been in business for years was shutting their doors, which is why all of their inventory was being auctioned off, but in the same respect, there were so many people willing to buy all of their used inventory I knew there was a need and a demand and somewhat profitable opportunity in this industry.
We initially started with 100 chairs and 10 tables we’ve now nearly doubled if not tripled our inventory and have added on things like kids, chairs, kids tables, flower walls, shimmer walls, and custom backdrop rentals.
we provide Party Rentals, balloon, decor, marquee letters, numbers backdrop rentals Flower walls, Photobooth, popcorn machine, cotton candy, etc.
We assist our clients in bringing their vision to life. What helps me most with customer relationship is that I’ve been in the hospitality industry my entire life I started working at 13 years old, so I’m very customer oriented I treat my clients as I would my family and I think they appreciate that most. I always try to find alternatives for them if possible to fit their budget because as we all know throwing a party can break the bank.
What I am most proud of is the fact that we’ve been able to build this business from the ground up. I have a huge support system. Our family is very helpful extremely very supportive, friends also they always support the business and our customers keep coming back, which helps our business grow most, surprisingly a lot of our business comes from fellow balloon artist which you would think is unheard of because we are in the same Industry. I’m a firm believer of community over competition it this way everyone is able to grow.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I would say my personality has built my brand on social media. At one point I was making reels every day relatable funny reels to the balloon community as well as my clients and I always thought it was funny that when I would show up to my clients events they would see my reel and say something to me that I’ve said in the reel of course i was taking a risk because someone might’ve gotten offended by what I was saying, but was in good heart and with my clients it reminds them I’m a real person not a “everything’s perfect and great” type of robot.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I mix a little bit of old-school with some new school. I try to send out at least one email marketing campaign per month to all of my clients and anyone who I’ve sent an invoice to of course it doesn’t always garner a response, but in most cases I do notice more People reaching out once that email goes out. During the holidays, I also mail out Christmas letters and give special gifts to clients. Who’ve spent the most money with us as well as clients who have taken their time to leave us a review.
