We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karim Mowatt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karim below.
Karim, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’m self taught. I learned by watching others, reading books and watching YouTube tutorials. As a child of 6 or 7yrs old I fell in love with pictures and art. The first picture that captured my attention was the infamous Saigon Execution from 1968. It was in a Playboy magazine. I sat in my grandfather’s home in Jamaica and drew the picture almost to the exact (as a 7yo) and from then on, I drew every chance I got. The drawing eventually transitioned into writing screenplays and then to filmmaking. I wanted to make films in the 80’s and 90’s as a young man but the process was too extensive and expensive. Once the digital age came in, it gave me an opportunity. I bought a digital camera, a laptop and editing software and learned everything myself by reading books and watching YouTube tutorials.
Karim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started as an artist, then I went into music and writing lyrics. From there I wrote screenplays and books and creating colages’. Then i learned editing.
Writing music helped me to write screenplays and books and creating collages’ helped with editing movies..
My art comes from personal experiences. I served 20yrs in total in 33 different prisons across America and 8 yrs out of 20 in solitary confinement.
My films are on Amazon Prime now and has over 3 million views on YouTube.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The brain is loaded with a lot of information and experiences and once it is downloaded in a creative form, its physically satisfying just as much as spiritual satisfaction. Plus it gives the brain more space to continue to create. The reward is the finished product. To revel in the thought that what you thought of is now a piece of art for everyone to enjoy, or critique
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is bring untold stories to light. From the most horrifying to the most satisfying. Everyone has a story to tell, and if done creatively, they can be successful. My mission is to continue in the tradition of ‘creativity being the winner’. I try to the most creative as possible, with words, editing and capturing scenes.
